I need help deciding between NYU and UMaryland. At Maryland I got accepted into their college park scholars program. I'm pretty unsure about majors but am thinking about psychology or maybe marketing. I like being in the city but I also like the big state school feel, which is why I am having a lot of difficulty deciding because wish I could have both. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Is there a difference in cost to your family? If so, what could you and/or the other members of your family do with that kind of money?

For many students, UMD-CP would be so much less expensive than NYU, that even with regular trips on Boltbus or Megabus up to NYC it would still work out cheaper.

Be wary of UMCP’s hype about scholars, honors, etc. All of it amounts to your being entitled to buy a T-shirt to the effect. It’s still a state u with a lot of big intro and required core courses.

NYU is known as an expensive place and not as a good value for the money relative to other private universities and colleges. However, you have a name if you do marketing and an okay department for psychology (esp. behavioral neuroscience). Indeed, wouldn’t you have to transfer to Stern to be a marketing major?

These two schools are really different worlds - very different people, personalities and objectives. UMCP dresses in sports/athletic wear, and NYU is influenced by the garment district and Wall Street (for biz).

Keep in mind that there are a lot of transfers in and out of NYU. BTW, skip the bus; use Amtrack between NY and DC.

since one of my parents works at nyu, it’s actually around $8,000 cheaper for me to go to nyu

Go with NYU, it is cheaper and they have a great psycology program.

If both cost the same, then NYU wins. Since NYU is cheaper for OP, it is significantly ahead of UMD>
