My pleasure! Theater recruiting at MMC also mentioned that part of the conflict happens with scheduling too. Musical theater minors have dance everyday at 9:00am across town and a lot of the BFA required Acting classes are scheduled in the early mornings. She said it was a tough schedule with quite a few extra credits, but certainly not impossible. Best of luck with the rest of high school to your D!!
So, just to add a little more info to this topic…
I emailed MMC about the feasibility of the BFA Acting with MT Minor, and how it works with the gen eds, if the student should take AP classes, etc.
They wrote back: “The BFA in Acting program with the MT minor is very possible and doable as long as the student is willing to work hard and possibly take a few extra courses either during the fall and spring semester or even over the winter and summer sessions. You are exactly right with the AP credits. AP credits and college credits that they can take in high school are EXTREMELY helpful to eliminate Liberal Arts credits and free them up for credits within the major and minor. So if she can, take as many of those as she can, take the AP exams for those classes and make sure when she applies that those credits are given to the school.”
So, basically what @thestage603 said above.
Also, I looked at the website to see exactly how many gen eds are needed, and it seems very doable to me. They require two semesters of a basic freshman writing class (which I think most colleges do), and a math class. Then they require one class in each of 10 categories, but one of the categories is Creative Expression, and the MT dance class covers that, so that knocks it down to 9 categories.
So altogether, you’re looking at 2 writing classes, 1 math class, and 9 other categories, for a total of 12 classes. If you take 1 gen ed for each semester of college, that covers 8 classes. That leaves 4 remaining. Of course, you COULD take those with one extra semester. But if you want to graduate in four years with no extra semesters, there are three ways to get rid of those 4 extra classes:
- Take and pass AP classes in high school.
- Utilize the "winter semester." Like most colleges, MMC has a fall semester and a spring semester. In between, from December 23 - January 29, the students are on Winter Break. But they also offer an optional "Winter Semester" in January, in which you can sign up for a class that meets for 12 hours a week for the four weeks of January. So if you do that, boom! That's one gen ed gone. So if you take one gen ed during each semester of college, PLUS one class during the Winter Semester for all four years, that's all 12 gen eds taken care of with no extra semesters.
- Utilize "double dipping." There are a number of classes that can fulfill TWO of the categories, and you're allowed to take up to four of those. So if you take four "double dipping' classes (which count as 8 categories), then you only need four more, for a total of 8 gen ed classes altogether.
So, yeah, it definitely takes planning and extra work to do the BFA Acting with MT Minor, but it’s definitely possible!
Yes! This is awesome @actorparent!
Here are a couple of other things to keep in mind.
-
to enroll for the January semester the cost for the one 3 credit class is $2866. To stay in the dorm for the 31/2 weeks of January it’s $150 (if you register by 12/3, after that it’s $250). So there is additional costs to take classes outside of the “normal” semester. Not sure if the summers would be the same or more for the longer stay in the dorms.

daily dance is at 9am Monday-Friday for the entire 4 years for Musical Theater Minors. No exceptions that I know of. So any conflict with acting classes required for the BFA in Acting would need to be worked around which can be tricky.
But all in all, what a great major and minor to have!
I wish everyone the best as they continue through the process. I am looking back on last year fondly. A lot of excitement, travel and tense moments, just try to enjoy it and not to let it stress you out. My son applied to 12 schools. 9 of which were the low percentage of acceptance rate audition programs. We were praying for 1 acceptance and got 4. Things just have a way of working out. Trust in the process and try to have fun with it!
Thanks for the extra info, @thestage603 - that’s very useful to know!
We live in New York, so if my daughter went there, she would commute (one of the reasons I’m hoping she does go there or another NYC school, because we would save a lot of money in room and board!)
Congratulations on your son’s 4 acceptances - that is fabulous!!!
(And thanks for the wise advice about enjoying the process and not stressing out. My daughter is only a high school sophomore, and as you can tell, I’m ALREADY totally obsessed with this! I’m sure by senior year when we’re actually DOING it, I’ll be a nervous wreck and will be on CC 24/7! LOL. So yeah, I need to chill out. )
