Who has better schools, Cali or Mass?

better schoolS... the number of good schools in california outnumbers every state. sure mass. may have the schools to compete with stanford and caltech, but no state can top the UC system. in fact, most state flagship schools arent even on par with the mid-UCs (davis, irvine, santa barbara), much less with ucsd, ucla, and berkeley, and mass. is one of these states. and USC is like the equalizer for tufts or brandeis.

I would have to agree with kfc4u.

Harvard and Stanford, Draw
MIT and Cal Tech, Draw
Amherst and Williams, Pomona and Claremont McKenna, Draw
So far, we are equal.

But after that, California sort of beats MA...and it should given the size difference.

Tufts, Boston College, Boston University and Brandeis

vs

UCB, UCLA, USC and UCSD

No contest.

Of course, I am not inlcuding other great schools, like Harvey Mudd, Occidental, Pitzer.

Stanford,Cal Tech, Berkeley and UCLA is the ultimate combo. Between these four schools (hell, between Berkeley and Stanford is enough), they would crush pretty much any state in terms of research and influence. Not to mention CA's powerful UC system (SD,SC,SB,D,I) simply dominates and crushes Massachusett's public school system. Then we get CA's insanely good claremont schools to level it with Amherst and Williams. If we were playing basketball, this would be like the Lakers from 3 years ago (Kobe + Shaq w/ mediocre players) versus some crazy all-time baksetball team with Jordan, Magic, Wilt, Tim Duncan and a group of supporting players.

"they would crush pretty much any state in terms of research and influence"

True, but is that really all that matters in terms of overall quality? The thing I like about Massachusetts schools is the unity amongst them. Since MA is a small state, the wealth of excellent schools has a built-in support system, meaning it's easy for students to take advantages of opportunities at surrounding schools.

Williams, Amherst tad better than pomona & Claremont.
Harvard = Stanford
MIT = Caltech

Berkeley > tuft
other UC system >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> UM system

but mass. has one of the best woman college. Wellesley

Cali has USC as well. Not to mention Berkeley>>>>>>>>>>>> Tufts in terms of research and influence.

Massachusetts has Hahvahd. nuff said, this coming from a cali kid

They both have great schools. California has more schools because we have more intelligent people. Our population is considerably larger. Don't forget Smith and Wellesley making a major contribution to the Bay state's side of the scale.

Berkeley, gah...

Don't forget Emmerson College. It has great rep for communication.

Not to belittle Massachusetts because I am a MA resident but California just has more well-known schools than we do. With that said, MA is not a large state and rather small. However, we have some of the best schools, including Harvard, Wellesley, and MIT, around. So, for us to be considered against university power-houses as Cali, that is a major thing, especially considering all the states we are thought to offer a "better" education than. In addition, Massachusetts has Boston :).

Forgot to mention: Massachusetts has some of the best prep schools in the country, especially compared to Cali.

Scripps in Ca is in my book on par with Wellesley. I predict it is an up and coming school

scripps cant compare to wellesley. the LACs in MA are far superior than that of anywhere else. I would say CA vs MA is a tough call but when you line them all up side by side i think MA comes out as the winner. though the UC system is awesome, MA just has too many top univerisites and LACs that i think MA comes out as the winner

I think what it comes down to is the whole argument between "quantity vs. quality." I've altered my opinion from my last post a little bit after some thinking. Cali wins for quantity of top schools but, MA wins for quality.

Cali has more schools that MA and, a good number of those school are of high-caliber. However, Massachusetts should not be considered "less" than Cali. According to the rankings( I think either US News and World Report or Princeton Review) this year, Massachusetts has the top research-university, Harvard, and the top LAC, Williams College. I don't really believe in rankings but, since they bolster my argument and have some validation, I use them for statistics:). The statistics say that, although Cali has more universities at the top of the rankings, objectively stating, MA has the "best" universities. Also, MA has a higher concentration of high-caliber LACs(Wellesley, Smith, Brandeis, Williams, and Amherst) while Cali has a higher concentration of high-caliber research universities, including Stanford and the UC Sysem, which I consider the best state-college system in the country. Cal Tech and MIT are both equal except that MIT has more "prestige."

Personally, I think MA schools are better than Cali's in terms of undergrad teaching because Cali places so much emphasis on research and grad school and MA seems to offer more opportunities to undergrad because its colleges and universities are smaller(except for Harvard, not as much competition at the colleges).

I'd say Williams, Amherest = pomona but > claremont mckenna

Harvard = Stanford
MIT > Caltech.... I may be biased but MIT just has far better research IMO.
UC system > UM system except for medical school U. Worchester is ownage.
Mass. has Brandeis, BC, BU, Tufts, + so many elite private LACs.
CA has USC...oh yeah and a few private colleges.
so nothing can really be said.

With MA its also much more compact, if this were going to be a fair analysis you would have to say East coast vs west coast because Cali is alot bigger than MA. If that were the case, CA would then be crushed without contest. East coast rapes the **** out of west coast, college-wise anyways.

"MIT > Caltech.... I may be biased but MIT just has far better research IMO."

This is not true, for example in geology and aeronotical/aerospace engineering Caltech has far better research than MIT. It depends more on the field. But as for undergrad school Caltech = MIT.

"UC system > UM system except for medical school U. Worchester is ownage."

UCSF is one of the top ranked medical school in the world.

for primary care or research? i haven't heard of it. I guess those cancel out then, my mistake.
