MassArt summer pre-college as a commuter?

My daughter is interested in the MassArt summer program, but she doesn't want to live there. We live close enough for her to commute.

Has anyone else done this? I'm wondering how this will affect her ability to bond with the other students, work late in the studio, etc. I'm afraid she might be too distracted living at home and hanging out with her home friends.

I would suggest letting her stay there. Getting to know people and hanging out in between classes was the best part of precollege for me. She may be more distracted, but she'll need to learn how to focus on her work eventually.

My daughter will be a rising junior in 09, so the commuting program might be OK. It's only 2K to be a commuter, 4K to live there. When she's a rising senior the following year we will look at heftier programs (like RISD, 6K) where she can board, if she is still interested in pursuing art school.

Has anyone ever done the Art Institute of Boston over the summer? They seem to offer courses a la carte, not a cohesive program. My daughter took a drawing class there once and she said that nobody interacted with anyone. The teacher didn't foster any social connection. She was completely turned off.

NewtonArtMom - RISD program is more like 7K. They state that the cost of art supplies can be in excess of $800, mind boggling to me, but if you add it all up, it will be close to 7K.

MassArt looks better and better for 09.

Perhaps RISD in 2010, if I have a job.
