Congrats to condor, mumsie and beltrami on their exceedingly clever and wonderful children!

D was just accepted to The Park School of Communications at Ithaca College with a Deans Scholarship of $8000 a year. She is also a candidate for the Parks Scholars which covers full tuition/room/board/books.
She also got $1000 from Penn State School of Communications.

Wow, we've seen some really exciting merit money here. Congratulations to all of our students (and parents) for this wonderful news.

DD got her scholarship letter from Centre today. She applied to two schools ... Centre and Hendrix. Got acceptance letters from both and scholarships from each for $15K per year for four years. Now she's just got to decide which one she'll accept. I'll just be glad when it's all over.

Congratulations, SplashMom! But a tough decision.

S2 just got word from Lake Forest College: $10,500 per year for 4 years. Very excited kid here! (And mom!)

Congrats, Splashmom! Any preference as yet??

Woo hoo, momofthree! I just searched the "accepted" thread earlier today to see if I saw anything on your DS. I'm so excited for him and I know you must be, too! Wonderful, wonderful news.

A tough decision for Splash, to be sure. I think it will be a while before she has a real decision.

hsmom: Congrats to DD

Bethel: (and anyone else:) What are "recruiting scholarships"? Are they scholarships offered by colleges that you haven't applied to already???

Also: Do you have to apply separately for these merit scholarships or do they get offered after they've seen the child's transcripts and great grades and test scores????

Just learning .....

From what I understand, there are two kinds of recruiting scholarships - those that are offered to prospective students before they apply (for example, University of Rochester's Bausch & Lomb scholarship and the Furman Scholar award) - they are awarded based on school recommendation and academic merit. If the student applies, the application fee is waived and they are guaranteed "x" amount of money if they are accepted.
Another type of recruiting scholarship is simply the merit-based awards open to any student who applies - some have a separate applucation and some are based soly on the college application. The can range from full tuition/room/board to half- and quarter-tuition to getting the state tuition rate at a public university (when you are an out of state student).

The server kicked out some previous messages, so readding:

S accepted to U of Miami with 3/4 scholarship.

I'm re-adding mine too...
D got 1/2 scholarship to U of Miami and $10,000 per year to Marist College.

DD accepted to her first three schools and is delighted to have been accepted. Period. It is unlikely that she will qualify for merit aid, but we are so happy for those of you who have received these wonderful awards.

Re: Recruiting Scholarships- I didn't realize that there was a term for it- but they are a great thing to have as it clues other schools that there is potential $ available from a particular school and they may try to match the offer. My d had the U. of Rochester Humanities and Social Sciences award 2 years ago. As it is awarded in 11th grade, it was included on her activity sheet. We believe that knowledge of the award may have prompted Carnegie Mellon to "counteroffer" a Merit award of $8,000. I think that if schools know upfront, that a kid may be getting some merit $, it may put you in good bargaining position for merit aid at another institution. I believe Renssellar (can't spell it) also has a similar award. She didn't take advantage of those awards as all NY parents know (IMO) the "biggest bargain" is the land grant schools at Cornell.
For the more "average" type of student- University of Tampa awards up to $8000 Merit scholarship for those applying with 3.2 GPA and above. I believe you need to maintain a 2.8GPA to maintain scholarship. D # 2 got that award from Tampa.

Marny and others: Thanks for the info regarding "recruiting scholarships".
S1 is a junior in High School. So far, 4.2 weighted (all A's); this will rise as he gets more credit for AP's. He's a possible NMSF -- will know when cutoff is established in Sept. He's taking the SAT on Saturday so we'll see how that goes.... He took the ACT the beginning of Junior year and got a 33; he'll take it again in Feb.

Do these "recruiting scholarships" come from reported SAT scores??? I am wondering how do colleges that you haven't applied to know that you have "potential"??? Do all these schools have access to SAT scores even if you didn't list them on your SAT application list of schools?

We are just novices to all of this so we appreciate all "enlightenment" offered by all. :)

What are the Cornell land grant schools mentioned above??? Is that for NY students?

Congrats to all who have posted their kids' acceptances and awards. Just Awesome!!!

The goats are dancing at the ranch. D has been awarded the I.B. Singer Scholarship at UMiami, their highest academic award (full-tuition). We are very grateful. The terms of the renewable scholarship are (to me) very reasonable, even generous.

Plan the work. Work the plan.
