Yay Curmudge....that is terrific news for your daughter. Yahoo. And good for the goats!!

Go 'smudge! And Florida...nice place for the 'rents to visit, no?

Big congrats to the D, Mudge. Are any thoughts about a decision coalescing, or is it still too soon? Waiting to see how the competition weekends go?

Awesome news, curmudgeon!! Gee, the choices she has to make!

Curmudgeon, the good news just keeps a comin' - are you starting to breathe yet?

Chiming in with cheers for the mudgling. We have all watched and waited with you. Splendiferous.

Thanks all. She's still pretty pumped.

lderochi, things are just starting to come into focus. Paring down from 3400 4yr schools to her list of ....uhhh....slightly less than 3400 4 yr schools was difficult, to say the least. We logged over 12,000 miles on the ground plus one flight to points North and East of the Syracuse airport. We own every college guidebook ever printed. But right now we have passed an important mile-marker on our trip, the mile-marker that says "Yeah. It probably was crazy but it was worth all the hours to do it this way." She has 6 incredible schools to choose from that are somewhat affordable. That was our goal. It's all gravy from here on in. We're a happy bunch.

As soon as D takes a school off her list she will notify that school so that her scholarship can be isssued to another deserving kiddo.

Curmudgeon,

Wow! The news keeps getting bigger and better!! Way to gooooo!!!

Congratulations Curmudgeon!
And I have a feeling that she ain't done yet! :)

Congrats Curmudge- Full tuition-- that should bring a big smile. It sounds like you d will have many great choices. And Northeastmom- your news is getting better and better. I just want to give a bit more info on the U of Rochester Awards for anyone interested. High Schools throughout the country can n ominate one student for the Bosch & Lomb, Humanities and Social Sciences (name may have changed) and the Kodak Leadership. My d's HS always makes the info about the awards known to the kids. I guess they are trying to nominate someone who is truly interested in the particular school so at least they'll be able to get a financial advantage and not just list the award on a resume. It would seem silly to nominate someone who was not at all interested in the school at the same time that they do have a kid who wants to attend the college. So all scholarship announcements are pretty well publicized at our HS. Most of the kids nominated for any of the awards are top students and are usually in the top 10%. I think it is good to know about specific awards in which the HS nominates one of their students. If a kid is truly interested in attending the school, I would guess that a guidance counselor would gladly nominate a deserving student who shows interest in that particular school. And the reduced tuition for Cornell's land grant schools' is only for NY state residents.

I don't post a lot, but here is what DD (she is our oldest child, so this process is all new to us) has gotten offered so far.

She applied to :
UCs: UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego and UC Irvine (UCI=safety school)
Pepperdine, Ca
University of Texas at Dallas
Baylor, Tx
USC, Ca
UNC Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Duke, North Carolina
(and she is still thinking of applying to TCNJ because she would get full tuition, room and board and laptop)

So far, accepted to :
Baylor -- full tuition x 4 years +$3k/year towards housing if stays on campus (offer based on dd reaching NMF status and puts Baylor as first choice)
UTD --full tuition x 4 yrs + $3k/year towards housing if stays on campus
UNC Chapel Hill --waiting to see if she gets any scholarships
UC Irvine
USC --will automatically get 1/2 tuition if she advances to NMF and puts USC as her first choice (hoping she will get offered a scholarship for full tuition though)

Dd getting a interview from a Duke alumni sometime this week

Also, D just got word that she is a finalist for the UTDallas MCDermott scholarship which Curg kindly told me about (40- 45 finalists vieing for 18 scholarships). The McDermott Scholarship includes full tuition, fees, books, paid for study abroad opportunities, 2 paid flights home, AND $1,100/month stipend x 4 years. Finalist weekend is March 17 -19 and they will pay for airfare and hotel for D and one parent.

mom of four that is so cool about the McDermott. My D talked to last year's val again recently and she still says they are treating her like royalty at UTD. One of the best deals going. Good luck.

wonderful, wonderful news curmudgeon and momoffour. awsome! great going! thanks for sharing the good news.

Congrats to everyone on all these great offers!

Cur brings up a really important point, the terms for retaining the scholarships. This is a definitely something to keep in mind when comparing offers. You may want to ask the schools for the % of kids who are able to retain your same scholarship for 4 years. Just another piece of the puzzle.

What I found appealing about the UMiami scholarship is that it is solid for two years Then at the end of two years, if you have a 2.7, it's renewed for 1 year. If it's a 3.0 it's renewed for the remaining two years. I like that a lot better than having to have a 3.0 (or better) after year one (not much time to scramble if you make a C or two).

UMiami is extremely generous. D#1 received $18,000-plus per year for Law School. And the campus is gorgeous this time of year!

Congrats to Wish's DD. Awesome

I just read on another thread that full tuition renewable merit awards don't increase as the school's tuition increases. Is this true? I would think that the renewable part (with continued good grades) would include tuition increases. The post on the thread gave the example of a renewable award of 31k which covers tuition. BUT THEN, each year the cost of tuition goes up 10% which means that by year 4, you will have to chip in about 10K. Is this right?

Nope. Full-tuition awards routinely increase as tuition increases. As do 1/2 tuition, etc.

As to the 10% a year tuition increase you ask about such that there is a 10K gap senior year - I haven't seen a school with that large of an increase sustained for that period of time. (Of course Richmond did almost that much, all in one year. LOL.) There may be one, but I haven't seen it.

Let's get to celebrating, people. Who got something nice today? I know Doddsdad and I are waiting on packages for our kids from Hanover and D hopes to hear from Millsaps this week, too.

curm: thanks for the info. I thought the info from the other thread didn't sound right. I knew you guys would know the truth.

Congrats to all that are getting good news!!! :)
