Turns out I never noticed this thread, (so thanks for bringing it up :)). I'm an international student, so hopefully this'll be useful for any future applicants. (especially since there's so little scholarship and acceptance data for internationals out there)

Attending Johns Hopkins University. (BME)

So far these threads haven't included local scholarships very often - but I'm adding this one in! DS just got a Byrd scholarship, to go along with enough local scholarships to wipe out his student loans for year one. If the government, in its wisdom, chooses to continue funding the Byrd scholarship program, and if DS does not win any more scholarships, he will graduate with approx $7000 in student loans. YEAH!!!!!!! I love scholarships! (and if he wins a few once he's in school - maybe no student loans :) )

D of a friend got offer of $21,000/year Carleton (merit - not need based). She's going.
Carleton sponsors 75 or more National Merit and National Achievement Scholarships in each entering class. Those selected will receive a renewable total stipend of $2,000 per year. National Merit and Achievement Finalists designating Carleton as their college choice are eligible for consideration for a Carleton-sponsored Merit or Achievement Scholarship. These scholarships represent the only "non-need" or "merit" awards available at Carleton. Other college funds are awarded on the basis of financial need.
It looks like Carleton does not offer merit aid - except for the small NM scholarships. (But maybe I'm reading this incorrectly??) Perhaps the aid is need based after all???? With of a cost of attendance over $40,000, $21,000 could be needbased aid for people with healthy incomes in the $90,000- $100,000 range.

"D of a friend got offer of $21,000/year Carleton (merit - not need based). She's going."

Carleton does not offer $21,000 annual merit scholarships, or anything remotely like that. They do offer need-based grant money and, as anxiousmom memntioned above, their only merit money comes in the form of $2,000 per year for National Merit Finalists. My daughter is receiving that merit award, plus a moderate need-based grant.

Sometimes the need-based grant money at Carleton comes from named scholarships, but make no mistake, it is need-based. (Part of my daughter's grant was changed to a named scholarship last year).

paying3tuitions

I think you could send a thank you note to the admissions office and ask that it be forwarded to the anonymous donor.

My son's final merit results were:

Goucher: they first awarded $15,000 per year, later said he was a finalist for a 3/4 to full tuition scholarship, but would have to submit an essay. At this point, he withdrew himself from consideration, because he was also accepted EA at Lewis & Clark and preferred Portland.

Lewis & Clark: first awarded $10,000 per year and later upped it to, I think, $17,000.

Grinnell: $15,000 per year with automatic increase if tuition goes up.
Oberlin: $12,000 per year
Macalester: $3,000 per year NM
Carleton: would have given $2,000 per year NM except son got a corporate award.
Haverford, Vassar, Pomona and Reed: zippo--he would have gotten $2,000 per year corporate NMS at any of them.

GPA: 3.98 uw (school doesn't weight) rank: 12 or 13
SAT: 2340 (760, 790, 790, essay 10)
ACT:34
SAT II: French 710, US History 760
AP English 5 AP French 4
NMF
Presidential Scholar candidate
Scholars Bowl state champion (though this happened after admissions decisions)
wrote and directed one act play, directed full-lenghth play

He's going to Grinnell

OK, I guess I really should post son'o'dad'o'2's merit awards to give a couple more data points.

Stats:

2300 SAT
3.4 UW GPA (most rigorous courses)
solid ECs, not superstar

Merit Awards:

RPI: $10K/year for 4 years
Case: $16K/year for 4 years

I believe these are the bottom tier of their merit awards.

Both were non-binding early action.

He did a local interview with Case admissions, but this was very early in the process and he was treating it as a practice interview, so I don't think he would have exactly knocked their socks off.

He picked Case, but not based on the money.

Should also note that two girls in his class got $15K from RPI, one for medalist, one after application.

This is pretty late, but perhaps it can be of some use to the class of '12 applicants...

D's stats:

SAT: 2010 (580m, 670w, 800cr)
SAT II: Spanish-660, US History-670

ACT Composite: 29

GPA: 4.06w (I don't have her unweighted gpa)

Decent EC's, Stong Rec's

Her Scholarship Awards:

Ohio State University: $7,600/year for four years
Clark University: $14,000/year for four years
University of Delaware(Honor's Program): $6,000/year for four years
American University: $15,000/year for four years

She'll be attending American U. this fall. While the scholarship makes it possible for her to go to AU, her decision wasn't based exclusively on that--it was mainly based upon the strength of their Intl. Studies program, as well as the school's location.

kelsmom,
Yes, you're right that COA at UM is not 55k (thank goodness!) I put down all of the scholarships that she received. She was given the MSA first, but when she got the full Shipman, the MSA was revoked so as not to go over the COA.
