Masters in Finance or CPA or ???

Hey folks,

I love this place so this is where I usually go for questions.

I'm most like going to get a double major Finance/Accounting with a minor in Math. The question is what ELSE I want to do with my majors. The choices could be getting a masters in Finance or going through with the CPA, or nothing at all.

As for doing nothing at all... is there a chance of getting paid 6 figures? I would be happy making $80,000 a year, but obviously the more the better.

I know a lot (at least I think I do) of CPA and pay. Well respected, people see CPA are are like OMG, etc etc. They get paid like 5-10% more than others, and from what I hear, get promoted higher/faster than others as well. This is cool and all, so that's why I like it. Anyone know if CPA is considered boring/repetitive?

As for the masters in Finance, I believe I like Finance more than Accounting. That's why I'm not leaning towards Accounting. I don't hate Accounting - it's not bad. I found Managerial Accounting VERY interesting, but I didn't like Financial Accounting too much. Anyone know how much increased pay one would earn? Job prospects in the future?

Any other information would obviously help. I'll be using google to do my own research. If you reply, thanks.

Check your state’s CPA requirements to see how many hours in accounting you need to be CPA qualified. If you get 24 hours as an undergrad that should be enough in many states(mine is 30). At any rate, you may have a good chance getting enough in during your master’s in finance. If your state has good options in terms of the experience requirement(i.e. not require you to spend two years auditing or doing something else you don’t like), then you can do both.

That said, I don’t know how valuable a Masters in Finance is anyway…

Hmmm…

If I’m looking to go into Finance, should I even worry about majoring in Accounting as well? Or would it look better and earn me better pay? It could open up more doors for me, that’s why I’m looking to double major.

There aren’t many valuable MSF programs, and the only valuable ones are ridiculously hard to get in. It’ll be a good major to fall back on, accounting that is.

Can I get into a masters of finance if I have a BS in Mathematics and what is the GPA requirement?
