Match Me / Reverse Chance a Rising Junior Looking Into Law

Hello! I’m a rising junior girl and am just curious to see where people might see me fit!

Demographics:

  • US Citizen, first-gen American from first-gen immigrants
  • IN resident
  • Public, somewhat competitive high school
  • Asian woman (Filipino)

Intended Major:
Not super sure yet. I will probably end up in international relations, legal studies, political science, or maybe economics. Either way, I want to go to law school specifically to pursue international business law or anything like that.

GPA, Rank, Test Scores:
Unweighted GPA: 3.911
Weighted GPA: 3.97 (My high school only allows three AP classes for sophomores, and I chose Euro. My grade mainly was dragged down by my precalc/trig grade, a B- both semesters. My only other B was in AP Euro first semester, which was a B+.)
Rank: 37/867
Test Scores: I’ve only taken the PSAT 10, and got 1220. I think that makes for 1320 on the actual SAT. Either way, I didn’t study for the PSAT this time around, and will probably get higher scores when I take the actual SAT in the fall this year. I also plan on taking the ACT.

Coursework:
So far, I’ve only taken AP Euro as an AP class. All my other classes were honors courses, except for my precalc/trig class, which was accelerated. My elective for both years, as my school, requires a study hall for the first two years, was Debate I and II, which was considered the most rigorous of them all, at least in my school.

Next year’s schedule includes APUSH, APLANG, and AP Psychology. The year after that will most likely include AP Gov, AP Human Geo, AP Lit, and AP Macro/Micro.

Awards: I have a few debate and speech awards, but mostly from regular-season tournaments. Right now, I’m sitting at three top-five debate awards and three top-five speech awards. I’ve also been to the state debate tournament twice, once for the speech state tournament, to debate districts twice, and the NSDA Tournament of Champions for supplementary events next week, if that’s worth mentioning.

If anyone has any recommendations for writing competitions, that would be much appreciated!

EC: (I hope I’m not going into too much detail ^^;)

  • Two years of debate, both in class and as a club, and one year of speech, only as a club. I am the recruiting officer for my district’s middle schools’ incoming freshmen and current freshmen. Additionally, next year, I will most likely be social media manager.
  • Executive for Environmental Awareness Club for one year: My sponsor and I have been leaning towards collaborating with other schools in my state to go down to the state capital and advocate for greener public policy. We were also possibly thinking of having our local Congressman sponsor an environmental bill at the state level. Still working out the kinks of those though!
  • Restarting Mock Trial Club - Our high school used to have a fairly solid mock trial team, but it died out a few years ago. I plan to hopefully get some people from speech and debate to join it.
  • Head Mentor at the Middle School Debate Club: Next year, the middle school club will start up, and I’ve been designated as one of the head mentors for two specific types of debate.
  • Head Mentor of a Local Debate League: Like the middle school debate club, I plan on mentoring in debate events I’m specific in. This debate league specifically aims at underprivileged students in my local area.
  • Tutor for English and Debate
  • I am a Sunday school volunteer teacher at my local church. I teach fourth graders currently and am planning on volunteering again next year and the year after that.
  • Model UN for one year: Not much to say. I went to one conference this year.
  • Piano for nine years
  • Accepted into the Notre Dame Summer Scholars Program for Law, but ultimately I rejected due to cost.

Essays/LORs/Other:

Essays: I haven’t written for college apps yet, but in general, my writing skills are pretty good.

LORs:
Debate Coach: 10/10, we’re pretty close, I’ve been in his class for two years, and I know he writes excellent recommendation letters, so I think it’s really strong.
Assistant Debate Coach: 7/10 I don’t know if I get to call her that anymore because she’s actually a vice-principal next year. Anyways, even though we only met this year, we’re close. She knows my love for debate well.
English Teacher: 8/10, we’re also pretty close and I had a nearly perfect grade in her class. I think she knows my writing skills and personality well.

Cost Constraints and Budget:
Miraculously, my family’s not really held back by budget. We’re lower-middle middle class, but thanks to external help, the only real thing that my parents and I will have to worry about is room and board. I think that some of the tuition could be covered as well. In the case of my older sister, who is graduating this year, about 30k of her 50k tuition was covered for all four years of her college. The rest was covered by tuition reimbursement from the local university where my dad works.

I know this was a lot to read, but I hope someone can help me think of colleges, as well as any general advice they have for me. I’m an incoming junior, so I think there’s still a lot of time to improve myself. Thank you so much!

Also forgot to mention; I’d prefer not to go to the south or west coast; I like it cold!

You didn’t give any schools you are looking at so it’s opened ended - and you are a Junior so it’s too soon. I’d recommend this year visiting some schools close to home - large, medium, small…urban, rural…a Purdue,Indiana…a Miami Ohio…a Northwestern or Bradley or Case Western for size, etc. - and come back in a year.

But I could see U Denver being a fit as well as Pitt.

Just keep doing what your doing, prep and start learning about the college landscape - and visit some varied schools - just to see what you might like. Even a Wooster in Ohio or Oberlin, etc. Small schools.

Good luck.

I don’t understand your unweighted GPA. What is the highest possible GPA?

I can’t figure out your schedule either. What science and foreign language courses are you taking? What does “accelerated” precalc mean? What math are you taking next year?

You seem to be loading up on “AP lite.” Be aware that many colleges give no credit for Human Geo or AP psych. I don’t know if you’re planning to take these to avoid hard science, but they won’t substitute for bio, chem and physics.Make sure you take math, science, and foreign language junior year.

It’s way too early to be focusing on your LORs. Be aware that many colleges require you to submit one LOR from an English/social studies teacher and one from a math or science teacher. Also be aware that many colleges require the LOR to be from a teacher you have junior or senior year. It makes NO sense to submit LORs from both the debate coach and assistant debate coach.

There are no college requirements for law school. Major in whatever you want to major it. Do well on the LSAT. (It’s a bit unclear as to whether that will still exist by the time you apply to law school.)

Congrats on going to TOCs and, yes, that’s worth mentioning.

It’s way too early to guess which colleges you should aim for. As suggested above, come back in a year.

Good luck!

I see! Thanks for the advice! I think that doing college tours will definitely be on my summer to-do list. It’s much appreciated!

Thank you for the advice! My UW is out of 5.0. As for accelerated classes, they’re kind of just a middleman class that’s a rank below honors. About math, I’m taking business calc through Indiana University. And for science and foreign language, I plan to take Physics Honors and Spanish III Honors.

Now that you mention the strength of still doing other AP STEM classes, I never really thought of it that way. I guess I maybe thought it would be better to play to my strengths? But that doesn’t make sense either because I was already pretty decent at chemistry. I’ll probably talk to my counselor about switching physics for AP Chem. I’ll probably end up having an easier time in there than if I take physics.

Thank you so much for the advice again! It really made me realize how much I was overthinking college already ^^; and I’m not even close to being ready to match! I’ll definitely stick to just visiting campuses this summer. Anyways, thank you so much, it means so much to me!

Better if you can go when school is in session - but summer is better than nothing.

I will write the same thing that I write for al students who have just finished their soph0more year in high school: it is FAR too early to be looking at specific schools, and it is far too early for anybody to figure out admission chances.

First, junior year is the most challenging year in high school, and for some students this means a substantial drop in their GPA, but for others, this means an increase. So that 3.91/5.00 could go up or it can drop. Any predictions based on this GPA are even less reliable than the ones provided to rising seniors.

Second, many, and sometimes most, of the higher-level awards that students receive in activities like Speech and Debate are received during the Junior year. So you do not know what your achievement list will look like when you apply, either.

Third, your own interests and preferences can change quite a bit between now and when you start applying to colleges. They can change because you change, they can change because you learn more about colleges, and they can change because you change your plans for your future.

Finally, you do not really know what your parent’s financial situation will be in another year and a half when you apply for college. Unless your parents have put aside $300,000 for your college education, you do not know what they will be able to afford when the time comes to commit to a college.

You should not be spending this much time trying to figure out which college exactly is the best for you. Instead, you should be spending your time a lot more constructively. Either start your summer plans, or take a much-needed break from thinking about all things related to college.

Come back next summer with the same questions and with an updated profile and people here will help you put together a good college list.

Good luck and enjoy the summer!

3.911 out of 5.0 suggests approximately a B average. If this is not the case, can you recalculate based on A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0 (add these up, then divide by the number of grades)?

If you do have a B average in high school, you need to improve your academic performance by college, since law schools with good law job prospects afterward tend to be highly competitive for admission (A or maybe A- average in college at the minimum, along with high LSAT score).

For an approach to selecting colleges for further research, those that emphasize writing may represent especially good choices for students with prelaw interests: https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/writing-programs. Dickinson or Allegheny, schools that appear in the preceding site, may suit you, for example.

That’s NOT what I was suggesting! You didn’t list foreign language, physics or business calc in your original list of coursework. I just wanted to make sure you were taking a foreign language, a science and math your junior year.

After recalculating, it comes out as an 3.857.
I think that I may have just gotten confused about my GPA. All of my classes are scaled at a 4.0 level except for my AP Euro class, which is scaled at a 5.0. I’m sorry ^^;

Thank you for the advice about law school!

Oh, I see! I’m sorry for making things confusing! ^^;

Thank you for advice! I’ll definitely look into it. Thank you again!

I see! Thank so much for the advice! I definitely think I was getting in my head about applying for college. I’ll take your advice to start my summer plans.

Based on your revised GPA calculation, you should be a realistic candidate for some of the other colleges listed in that site.
