How much will your parent pay each year?

FA will not be generous with a single parent with that income. You’ll be a full pay applicant.

What are some of the schools that your guidance counselor recommends? The supermatch feature that Erin’s Dad mentioned will also guide you towards appropriate schools. You are limiting yourself to a highly competitive geographic area, I think you need to cast a wider net and look at some LAC’s near cities in other parts of the country. Use the net price calculator for the colleges that interest you. Are you competitive for an athletic scholarship?

my dad can pay 30,000 per year. my guidance counselor rec commends fordham uconn and marist

Without a hook Fordham is out of reach.

what is dragging me down? how could i have a chance?

You have a 1680/240 SAT! That is what is dragging you down.

ccchiiiillllll broooooo0000oo

Providence, Roger WIlliams, UVM, UNH. I don’t think Fordham is out of the question

Your SAT scores make you only a low match for UCONN. Look at US News and World Report for their list of schools for B students. There is also a thread for 2015 Students in the 3.0-3.5 GPA range and one for Where did your B student get in? You are in the 25th percentile as well for UVM and Marist. You need to find match and safety schools. These would be where your GPA and SAT scores are in the 75th percentile.

Fordham is unlikely.

However, this student won’t get aid at any school. Marist and Providence will likely accept him, but w/o any aid except a 5500 loan.

You need to have your dad run the NPCs on these schools’ websites.

His income is high and he’s the only adult…the calculations will be tough on that.

what if i have a sister that will be attending college in 2years?

my dad also pays alimony

Yes, consider schools where you will stand out in the applicant pool in more ways than one.

You will miss some very appealing colleges by restricting your choice to metropolitan areas, but here you go;
Canisius College
Niagara University (1.5 hr from Buffalo)
Trinity College
U of New Hampshire (1, 15min from Boston)
Manhattanville College
Drexel University
Drew University
Juniata College (30 miles from State College, PA and 40,000 undergraduates)
U of Dayton
U of Akron
Case Western Reserve University
Manhattan College
Temple University
State University of New York-Albany
State University of New York at Buffalo

I also agree with Drew, Ursinus, Juniata, Canisius, Manhattanville, Manhattan, Stonehill and St. Michaels. Trinity in CT is more selective and is in what I consider an unsafe section of Hartford. A number of my daughter’s friends went to U. New Hampshire and received a wonderful education. Have you looked at Southern, Central and Western CT state universities?

Please look at the US News Report for B students. They will list the selectivity and middle 50% scores and you can use this as a guideline. There are many other great schools that are not on this list. Also, take a look at the book, “Colleges that Change Lives”. You may want to consider taking the Dec. ACT. The registration deadline is Nov. 6.

How are you doing with the UCONN courses? I am concerned that you did not do well enough on your 1 AP course whose score you will not report and are taking UCONN physics and economics while only taking precalc. Have you looked at Southern, Central and Western CT state universities?

Spend some time looking over the suggesstions from parents on this thread and make an appointment with your counselor ASAP to review a new list. It is VERY important to cast a wide net. Again, I will tell you that you are looking at applying to schools in a VERY competitive geographic area, many of these schools look to get a more diverse student body and that includes geographic diversity as well. Check the site: collegedata.com. It will list class of 2020 data of gpa and sat/act scores and you can match to see your chance.

Have you won any state level track awards? If so, this would make you a more attractive applicant to some schools.

Case Western is out of reach.

The applicant has a “reasonable” chance of admission to Case Western Reserve University if there is an aspect his or her profile that stands out; some significant distinction, such as the Track & Field background or a desire to major in Economics rather than Engineering; or a stated desire to be an engineer with a minor in Classics, as so on. It’s all about distinguishing oneself.

^ You really think a student with SATs 200 points below the 25%ile of entering scores has a reasonable chance? And 92% of admitted students are in the top quarter of their class…

having a younger sister going to college in a couple of years might help once she’s a freshman, but it won’t change give you aid for the first two years. You’d still be very short for aid for two years.

As for the alimony…how long will your dad have to pay that? How much does he pay per month?

I don’t know how that affects FAFSA or CSS Profile.
