Match, Reach, and Safety Schools

Hello everyone,

I will be applying to schools this Fall as a Freshman and was wondering whether I was aiming properly given my statistics.

2100 SAT I (M680, CR740, W680) on my first sitting last October. I am fairly certain I gained 20-80 points at the June sitting, but those results are not in yet so for now I guess it will be best to use my October numbers.

3.9/4 (my school does not assign weighted GPA's). Very rigorous curriculum pursued.

WHAP 5, Chem 3, APUSH 5, US Gov't 5, Calc AB 1 or 2 (took a community college class that did not cover integration).

Extra Curricular's:
-Founded and led a very active Arts Club at my local Community College (one of the two best in my state) where I take a lot of dual-enrollment classes.
-Was president of my Comm. College's Political club
-Directed all Student Government programming as Social Vice President
-Initiated, designed and completed an original research project on student motivation in relation to theories of Intrinsic Motivation that is now in the process of being published (I'm first author).
-Contributed a brief autobiography (20p) to a book published by my college on student success.
-Designed and implemented a brand new Freshman First Year Experience program for incoming Freshman at my Comm. College.
-Worked as an Assistant Director of Student Activities to more effectively integrate all aspects of my community college with the local community.

I will have very strong recommendations.

My list right now looks like this:

Stanford-Reach
Duke-Reach
Brown-Reach
Claremont McKenna-Reach
Georgetown-Reach
Tufts/Brandeis (haven't decided yet)-Reach
Cornell School of ILR-Reach

Bucknell-Match
Hamilton-Match
Colby-Match
Colgate-Match
Macalester-Match
College of William & Mary-Match
NYU-Match
Boston College-Match
Case Western Reserve University-Match

University of Connecticut-Safety
Clarkson-Safety

Do you guys think this is a proper/reasonable assessment?

Oh and my subject test scores are 750World History, 800 US History, and 690 Literature. Looking to get some decent scores in Math 1 and 2 as well this fall.

Most of your EC’s seem to involve your CC…How many college classes have you taken? And are you SURE you will get dual enrollment credit for all your college classes?
Otherwise you may have to apply as a transfer student, which might change things …

I get the dual credit, but most of the schools on that list (all, actually, other than UConn I think) won’t accept any of it, so I’ll just be applying as a normal Freshman. I’ve spoken to quite a few admissions reps about it. I’m home schooled too, so they tend to be accommodating.

Are you sure you want to apply to all of those colleges? That’s a lot of essays to write! Take some time to really research the schools on your list to determine if they are a good fit. Maybe some will not be, and that will help pare your list to a more manageable size.

This is just my list of potential schools. I’m really just looking to see if I’m gauging myself properly against the competition. I’m going to be trimming it down to 8-14 by the time I apply.

"I’m home schooled too, so they tend to be accommodating. "

ok good that explains it!
do you need FA? or merit $$ in order to afford to go to a private college? most of the colleges on your list are private colleges and charge a lot. Only Stanford offers really generous FA to all but the wealthiest families. .

Very weak scores for Stanford, Duke, Brown. Those 3 are most likely out of reach, otherwise good assessment.

I need about 30k from any of the schools except UConn, as I’m a state resident. I am a bit worried about this, as my family is in the 90-100k income range that seems to fall through the cracks of financial aid. I do know that Duke, Brown, and CMC offer very generous aid, but I’m not sure what the small uni’s/LAC’s will give me. Their calculators indicate I’ll get enough FA, but I’m concerned that won’t be the case in real life.

I would suggest that there might be too big a gap between your match and safety schools. Maybe look at a couple of schools in the range of Lehigh, Lafayette, etc. as well.

Ok. Do you have any other middle schools that you would recommend? I’m mainly looking at places with strong Econ programs that feed into banking and consulting positions.

NYU is known for having lousy aid. Being OOS you will probably not get much from William and Mary.

Bump insertextracharacters

Consider U. Of Rochester as target.

Brandeis is definitely not a reach, it’s basically as competitive (if not less so) than NYU, BC, and W&M. Stanford, Duke, Brown, Cornell are more or less very high reaches.

It would also help to know what your prospective area of study is. I’m guessing communications and government, but not sure.

Ok, good to know about Brandeis. And yeah, those four are essentially shots in the dark, but it’s only a few more essays so I don’t mind. I’m planning on applying as an Econ major. If I can’t push my math above a 700 I may go for philosophy or something more along those lines.
