Math 1 and Math 2

For anyone who got a 700 and above on these tests, give me some tips please :-B

Timing is everything. Time Math 1 like the ACT, and Math 2 is about 8 minutes faster.

does anyone know if it’s possible to take math level 1 AND math level 2 on the same day?

It’s pointless to take them both, period. Many schools will only accept one or the other.

@bodangles I don’t intend to submit both. I thought that I’d take both on the same day (with French) and then see on which math test I did better and submit the better one along with my French subject test.

So do you know if it would be possible to take math level 1 and level 2 on the same day?

You can take them both on the same day. As @bodangles said, its pointless, possibly counterproductive, but you seem adamant so go for it.

@CHD2013 why do you think it’s pointless? what if I score 780 on the Level 1 test and a 680 on Level 2? Wouldn’t I be better off then with my Level 1 score?

Then just take Level 1??? Math 2 is for people who have had precalculus. Math 1 is for people who have not had precalculus. You can’t be both types of people.

And there’s no reason you have to spend the money and time taking both tests at the center. If you want to see which one you’ll do better on, take a practice test of each!

@bodangles I don’t get why you answer in an undertone of pugnacity when I’ve just asked a simple question.

I have taken practice tests of both and my scores aren’t consistent. Sometimes I’m much better at Level 1, sometimes at Level 2 (because of the harder penalty on Level 1)

That’s why I feel like seeing which one will turn out better on test day.

No pugnacity here. :smiley: Have you taken precalculus?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/574757-admission-chance-is-it-worth-taking-both-sat-math-level-1-and-level-2-p1.html Maybe this’ll help you decide. As several posters say there, many schools prefer that applicants not take both. Some schools don’t even accept Level 1.

@bodangles

Sorry for misinterpreting!

The problem is that I didn’t attend a US high school and my curriculum only covered some precalculus topics. But because of the harder penalty on Level 1 I believe I may be better off with Level 2. But yeah, as I said my scores vary from practice test to practice test so I’m pretty clueless…

@bodangles thanks for the link!! I didn’t even think about the consequences for schools that don’t participate in scorechoice.

I guess I’ll probably stick to Level 2.

And I’m sorry for coming off that way! I should use more smilies to make sure I don’t sound too blunt.

The curve is definitely pretty nice. Maybe you can get a prep book and brush up on the precalc you’re missing? CollegeBoard also has some limited free materials on their website (https://sat.collegeboard.org/practice/sat-subject-test-preparation/mathematics-level-2) if you haven’t seen it already.

@bodangles

Thanks! I guess I’ll definitely take the Level 2 and do some hardcore self-studying :smiley:

@nadinem123 I’m going to play devil’s advocate and tell you to take both. I did both in June and used the Math I Test to warm up and make sure that I nailed the timing on Math II. I got a 770 M I and 800 M II, and recommend doing both. Doing Math I right before Math II will help you be prepared for a fast, fairly difficult test.

@Hermit9 wow congrats on your scores!

Do you think there will be any consequences if I apply to schools that don’t participate in score choice? (I doubt that I’ll score as high as you on both!)

It’s hard for subject tests to hurt you at all unless you’re ~sub 670. At UGA, a friend from my school was one of only 5 Foundation Fellows Scholars (full ride + privileges and $$$$$) and he got only a 690 Physics (but 780 and 800 Math I and II).

Unless you expect getting considerably lower than 700 on 2 or 3 of your subject tests, they probably won’t hurt you. Just go for it!
