Math 104 -- what kind of calculator to get?

I am wondering if it is worth going for the TI 89 but I don’t know if they are allowed. A TI 83 would be my next choice. I want to upgrade because throughout high school and SAT testing I have been using a TI82 with half a dead screen :/

There are no calculators allowed for this class.

I presume you mean no calculator during the exams? Penn and paper exams or computer exams?

Surely it can be used on the homework, though. Do you mean during exams only? No calculators are allowed in-class? At what point are they allowed?

no calculators are allowed on exams or recitation quizzes. an 89 can be helpful for homework to help you visualize 3D graphs and whatnot, but if you learn to use maple which they semi-require you to then you don't really need it. Homework is graded largely based on the work you write out rather than correctness, so a calculator doesn't do you much good. I rarely, if ever, used mine for anything more complicated than checking computations.

Would you recommend an 89 or 83?

the 89 does everything you need in the course and makes it a whole lot easier to do than the hell-program that is maple, the 83 won't really help you much at all

They do push Maple......yes they do.

it's really not necessary to shell out the $85 or whatever for Maple though, as it's on every computer in every computer lab on campus, I really regret paying for it last year. They do push it a lot though as hazmat said, there's usually at least one question on each midterm involving maple syntax, and sometimes certain homework problems are required to be done using maple. That said, i think it's still worthwhile to have a graphing calculator in lieu of actually buying maple, as you won't use the program very frequently at all, and to say it's less than user friendly is a huge understatement.

For those of you who are fans of illegal file sharing, you can just download maple off i2hub in about 10 minutes. Hell, if you have moral issues with that, I can surely burn you a copy!

I thought Penn could monitor that sort of thing concerning P2P filesharing?

I bought Maple and returned Maple upon my arrival on campus when I saw that it was #1 a pain in the butt and #2 free everywhere!! Don't buy it is absolutely good advice.....you can buy a lot of useful stuff with the funds.

Nah...they only care if you share files, and with i2hub, you aren't required to share. So those unknowing persons who end up sharing files benefit all the more clever people who know better!

Yeah Hazmat is absolutely right, don't buy Maple, just as DO NOT PAY 180 DOLLARS FOR THE MATH 104 BOOK SET! It's the biggest ripoff ever, and plus, the binding falls off in about 3 months on just about everyone's text. I knew international kids who bought it from their home country for 10 dollars. I'm pretty sure an old edition is the exact same as the customized Penn edition, except for one small section in the back that you'll need for math 114, and which you can easily photocopy from a friend.

Lighten up there MAX now that you are living amongst the smart folk at Penn you will find myriad of ways to save your funds!! Lots of fun things are also possible. You my friend are just days away from the time of your life!!!

So as long as you don't share anything you can download away?

Yeah books are a problem... I don't want to get ripped off

You can generally share away too, just don't be stupid. I'm an ITA and we have to give everyone this whole spiel at the beginning of the year about not downloading while we check their computers for viruses and whatnot, and theoretically you can get caught, and someone on my hall actually did last year, though nothing came of it, but he was downoading gigs of stuff almost every night read: being stupid.

also, use more subtle programs than things like limewire et al that screw with your computer anyway. i2hub and my tunes/our tunes are better ways to go

What do you think about programs like Warez?

oh, and for downloading addicts with macs, check out WireTap by Ambrosia Sowtware (<a href="http://www.ambrosiaSW.com)%5B/url%5D">www.ambrosiaSW.com)</a>. It's a shareware program ($20 to register) and is a bit of a hassle to use and is only really effective for very specific music downloads, but it's completely undetectable, as it records sound files as they are being processed by your computer (not after they reach your speakers mind you, so there's no dropoff in quality) and does not take them off the internet directly.

Haha see what mac users have to go through to get free loot! plunder the high seas if you must, but a mac's prolly not the best option if ya want easy bootleg ;)
