math 111 vs. 112

im planning my second semester freshman schedule:
i have a 5 on calc ab, but i feel a little rusty
should i take math 111 or math 112...
if i take math111 i will have to take 112 in the fall, or maybe wait until the fall to take 111 and then do 112 in teh spring of next yr
if i take 112 then il be done with calc

any insight?
is math112 very difficult...will i be at a disadvantage not being fresh out of math111?

also im premed if that matters

What college are you in?
I'd take 112. 111 will bore you

I was in the same situation and retook 111 and then took stats for premed. They want you to take 2 math courses for premed, and Cornell encourages you to not use AP credit towards premed requirements. 111 was a breeze and allowed me to concentrate on other courses. Ive heard 112 is the hardest of the 3 calc courses, and if you are trying to keep your GPA up for premed, it will look better to have an A in 111 rather than a B in 112. FYI, I started taking 112 but felt rusty on my intro calc (Calc AB material) and I decided to drop it and take 111 instead just in case.

I would only take 112 if you took BC calc in high school.

And for every who says the boring thing, its really not that bad, and unless math really really interests you in the first place, it wont be any less interesting.

Also, for premed its not like you are a more favorable applicant for taking 112. But if you are a person that likes a challenge or really is interested in calculus then take 112. It just isnt needed whatsoever.

thanks thats a good point the thing is that i think alot of med schools want two semesters of calc to be safe...so i was thinking if i used my ab and take 112 credits id only have to take one semester, if i do 111 il need to do a full yr....also i want to actually use soem of my ap credits

Very few med schools want two semesters of calc. WashU and Harvard are the only two top schools that I know of (and I completed secondaries for most of the top schools).

An equally few require stats.

Some want a full year of math though. So 1 sem of calc + 1 sem of stats or 2 sem of calc is usually good enough. Or you can be like me and have 8 credits of calc AP credit, take multivar calc, take linear algebra, AND take stats to pretty much satisfy the math requirement for any med school in the country. This includes washU which requires calc through differential equations.

the only reason you need a full year of math is for the cornell bio requirement.

In my experience, 112 basically destroyed me. Granted, I came from a 4 on AB Calc, but people are definitely right when they say it is a tricky course. Since Calc isn't required for my major (ILR), I decided to drop it after getting schooled on the Prelim. I'm sticking with Stat from here on out- but if I could do it over again, I would certainly do 111 and then 112. Chances are you are probably much better than I am at math, but 112 is difficult for most people.

However, there is a tremendous amount of high-quality support available for both courses: an academic supplement course on Wednesday nights, free tutoring, homework sessions where the course TAs will help you... I also had a great instructor (Murgescu). Though I definitely took advantage of all of the resources and office hours but still couldn't pull off a decent grade before I dropped it, definitely remember that there are many people there to help you.

112 is definitely tricky, but has a great curve...
