Thanks in advance.

I HIGHLY suggest going to discussion sections. More often than not, you work through all the homework problems–which usually translates to test questions.

I never went to MSI for math because the discussion sections were enough help to me. Plus, depending on the professor, they can be mandatory and they may assign quizzes during discussions. I don’t really understand why you’d rather go to MSI and skip sections entirely…

I’m going to sound stupid, but what is MSI?

“Modified Supplemental Instruction”

It’s basically like an extra discussion section.

it depends. I never went to MSI for Math 11A but all the other classes I attended MSI for I also went to the discussion. Also for Math 11A depending on who is your professor you might have a weekly quiz

It is going to be taught by Eastman.

One thing I forgot to mention. It says on the portal that they are optional. That is why I am asking. I wasn’t going to enroll in a section and not go to it.

I had Eastman for 11B and 22 and we had weekly quizzes in both classes however if it says that sections are optional then there probably won’t be. It doesn’t matter if u enroll in a section or not most professors are very laxed about it. Normally they allow u to choose which section u go to despite if u are enrolled in it or not.

I decided to enroll in the section even though it wasn’t required. And I hope you are right. Hopefully since the sections weren’t required that we won’t have weekly quizzes.

So when I enrolled for math 11a, I didn’t sign up for the secondary lab, and now its too late because 11A itself is full, even though some labs aren’t. It won’t let me swap because its the same class and The labs don’t show up under edit. Would I be able to drop in on labs even though I’m not enrolled in them? Or can they give me an add code to enroll in a lab?

Typically for 11A you can go to whatever section/lab you want even if you’re not enrolled in it. MSI can be useful, but sections are just as good. Mix it up and try out different MSI instructors and TAs for the first part of the quarter, then find one you think is the most helpful and stick with him/her. Sometimes there are really bad TAs, but since this is all optional, you can look for someone who’s good (usually the good sections are at inconvenient times, like 8am).

Hey ENT, I’ll be in 11A with you this fall, haha. And if your name speaks for itself, then we medical aspirations in common as well.

Sounds good and good luck. Be prepared for the ride of your life. Pre-Med is no joke.

Oh believe me I know. My first year at UCSC really opened up the breadth of responsibility it takes to be an aspiring medical student.

If it’s something you may be interested in, look into the Sigma Mu Delta Pre-Medical fraternity on campus this upcoming fall. I don’t know what year you are, and I don’t mean to toot any horns, but the fraternity has great resources for aspiring medical students (I’m an active myself).

Good luck to you as well man.

I heard about it and I’m definitely planning to join (if you guys want me that’s is haha). How do I get in touch with you guys? I read that last year was your charter class and I’m excited to hopefully be part and to contribute to something new.

I’m an incoming freshman BTW

Send me a PM or find Boris JewBear on Facebook and we’ll discuss it dude

Thanks man, I just sent you a PM yesterday.
