Math 1320 or Math 1220

Hey guys,

I am thinking to either take 132 or 122. I am quite good at math, but is 132 a lot more difficulty than 122?
Also, do you guys know if there are any particularly good professors for either class?

Thanks

which one you take should depend on which credit you have for 121 or 131, otherwise why are you skipping that class? if you have credit for 131 you should/need to take 132.

if there’s no reason you’re continuing in math (as in, you won’t continue past calc 2) you might want to avoid calc 2 as it’s a pretty horrid class here. i answered your other question in another thread, the calc teachers are typically grad students and they vary from year to year so recommendations are somewhat useless. if an upper level teacher/professor is teaching calc, what does that say about them, on the other hand. tenured professors teach graduate courses here, or maybe a 300-level class. not calc.

if you take 122 and decide to ever continue in math or need to, you’ll have to take 132 (122 will NOT substitute for it). so that is why i would wait and see what classes you have to end up taking. if you don’t need more math, avoid calc 2. if you need more math, you’ll need to take 132.

It will be strange this fall seeing all those 4-digit course numbers…

132 is a very hard class. Only take it if you feel comfortable remembering Calc from Hs and can jump right in.

Hi everyone,

I’m from Singapore and I took GCE A Levels. From the UVa website, I realised that I will be able to get advanced credits for MATH 1310 with my A Levels results. So, I would like to find out does that mean that I do not have to register for classes that are prior to that (e.g. MATH 1110, MATH 1140, MATH 1210, MATH 1220, etc)?

Please correct me if I’m wrong. Thank you!

(e.g. MATH 1110, MATH 1140, MATH 1210, MATH 1220, etc)?
1110/1140/etc - all below calculus, not required for anything
1210/1220 - two-class sequence of calculus, you cannot have credit for both 1210 and 1310 so you’ll never need to take those

basically college is not like high school - you can register for most classes without having taken every class below that - when viewing classes, look for “Prerequisites.” For 1320, you need 1310. For 1210, you do NOT need 1310 etc. This applies to all departments. I took Psych 250 without ever taking psych 101, or psych 220…240, since Psych 250 had NO prerequisite. Keep this in mind when planning your schedule.

Thanks for the explanation! I guess that means I can register for MATH 1320 classes this coming fall :)
