I’m a freshman at OSU and I’m in Calc 2/Math 152 and I am struggling (and it seems like most of my classmates are too). We have our first midterm this Friday and I am studying and for the most part keeping up with the homework but math has always been a struggle for me. My professor is pretty good and speaks perfect English. TA is okay, English is a little shaky but hes not that bad and is very helpful.

Still feel like Im struggling a lot with it. Im going to a review session tonight and they are going to go over the review sheet with us and let us ask questions. I’ve gone to tutoring but they are usually crowded and some people on my floor could help me as well.

Anyone with previous experience with the course know whether or not the tests are fairly similar to the review guide? The book problems arent too bad but some of the Webwork problems are crazy and take forever to do. Which concerns me considering we have about 50 minutes to take a midterm that covers 6 sections, so I guess questions cant get TOO long/hard, but who knows.

Any advice tips? I dont think it will be tooo bad, but Im still going to study a lot the next couple of days.

I did that when I found out who my teacher was about a month ago (when signing up for classes it just said OSU staff) and she only had two reviews and one was for Math 150 and the other was for some upper level math class.

I looked on some of the other professors of Math 152 RMP pages though and most of them said the exams weren’t too too bad if you studied hard and looked at the practice/review exams. They also said to try and look at some of the old midterms. There is a copy of a midterm from last year so I’m looking at that right now.

If you are still struggling be sure to use the resources at the Youngkin Success Center as well as the Math Dept. Both have free tutoring available for your math class.

Second make sure 152 is a class you need because sometimes Ohio State advisors place students in higher level math courses than what the student actually needs. My DS when he was a freshman did very well on the math placement test so his advisor placed him in 151 Calculus which was very difficult for him since he did not have calculus in h.s. He later found out that he had 8 other choices in math that he could have taken. It was too late for him to transfer by the time he learned about the other choices.

Finally if you do terrible in Math 152 you can always invoke the “freshman forgiveness rule”.

Good luck. I know it is tough but just stay on top of the work and get lots of outside help.

I think you already had your midterm, was it your first or second?

There are 3 in math 152, and lots of quizzes. I would find the other lecturers hours, read their reviews on rate my professor, and look into going to someone else’s lectures. All 152 exams are pretty much the same, and last I checked they put a practice midterm on moodle so find that and do it. Math professors are really lazy, they hate to change too much. The tutor room is great, and you can also go to other TA/Profs office hours. Younkin center has tutors, and tutors are great at explaining things easily.

Also google math 152 at osu, I know there is at least one website that has a compilation of old quizzes and midterms. Wolfram-Alpha can help you solve hard webwork problems.
