If I already have the entire Calc Textbook (not the custom Berkeley one) will I be able to use it for the class? Are the problems going to be different from the ones in the custom 1a/1b version? Will page numbers be an issue?

...bump >< It's kind of urgent.

same boat as you...here's something weird: when i looked at cal's OL bkstr arlier they said we use the custom1a/1b book but at ned's it says we use single var essential calc (which i believe is a summarizzed version of the ginormous early transcendentals text)...anyone else know how the page number problem works out (i have olsson btw)

Yes both the section numbers, page numbers, and problems are different. You pretty much have to buy the custom edition. But it's cheap and you can sell it back for a pretty good price I believe.

If you already have the textbook, there probably is no harm in showing up for class, see what the professor and GSI say, and then deciding if you want to buy the custom edition. Worst case you have to copy the problems for the first homework from someone else's book. The content of the book isn't going to differ much, so it probably won't matter for studying.

All that said, if it were me, I'd get the custom edition just to make my life easier, and as cheeks says, sell it back when you are done.
