math 203 or astr 001

I don't know if I should take math 203 (proofs) or astr 001 next semester, any advice?

I'm going to have to take either 203 or the other proof course ( I forget if its 202, or 204) eventually, because of math. I just don't know if I want to take it this upcoming semester, or if I should wait.

sorry to detract from the op, but astronomy has always been something i've been really interested in. are astronomy classes recommended to non-majors? do people take them "just for fun?"

You don't necessarily have to take it, depending on your situation. From the math program website:

[quote]
Students who begin with Math Math 104 in their freshman year usually postpone this [seminar] requirement until their second year. Students who have already taken one of Math 241, Math 410 or Math 425 can substitute a higher math elective course for the Seminar Requirement.

they seperate astronomy into ones for engineers and potential astronomy majors, and then everyone else. There is still a fair amount of math in the latter one, but pretty much everyone in that section is looking to fulfill a requirement.

theoneo, yeah I saw that. The thing is, I started out with 104. I'm going to be taking 240 this upcoming semester. I'm sorry, I should have probably described my situation better from the beginning. Given this info, what do you guys think would be the best move?

Uh I took Math 203 this semester.. but I don't know what kind of class you're looking for, so I'll just describe the class. It wasn't as rigorous or intensive as I thought it would be. It's a "freshman seminar" kind of, so grading is based a lot on participation in class and projects, as well as two midterms, but there's little emphasis on quizzes and homeworks. The material covered is interesting but not much - we only covered about 1.5 chapters of our modern algebra book. Overall, I wasn't very impressed by this class, since I expected more mathematical rigor in a class that's supposed to be for prospective math majors.

Potential astronomy majors?

Really?

bumblebee07- thanks for the info. I ended up switiching my astr for math 20whatever. Hope I made the right choice (...if not, its your fault...jk. I changed it a couple a days ago)

there's astro majors out there - they just spend their time getting high and listening to pink floyd, maybe that's why you've never met them.

but seriously, every astro major I ever met was either a complete genius or a pothead

^they could also be both...legalize...lol

I took astr 001, lol, really easy class. Pretty much a memorize-facts-and-spit-it-up sort of thing with occasional trig
