First, which astro 121 prof should I pick: Skrutskie or O'Connell?

Secondly, I'm kinda leaning toward taking Linear Algebra in the Spring and Calc III in the Fall. Any disadvantages? Anybody have Weiqiang Wang?

The only profs I could have for Calc III are Herbst (who I heard is bad) and Jakab (which has an 8 in the morning discussion). I cant do honors anymore so is Tunde Jakab good?

There is no calc inherently involved in lin al. A lot of times, your prof will integrate an integral (har har har, thank you, I'll be here all week) or something into the problems, but it wont be anything big, you dont need calc III to take lin al. The only thing I would be worried about is forgetting some of your 1337 calc $|<!11z while in lin al, but if you review a bit before you take calc III you will be fine.

conclusion: its fine to take lin al first, and I have no idea about any of the other questions you asked.

Depends on what else you want to take math wise in the spring - linear algebra can be useful for a few other math things. Although ODE and linear algebra do go well together as there's some overlap.

I haven't had much experience with both -well just talking to Herbst at a dinner, and perhaps having a few "lectures" (well putnam practice sessions if you want to be technical) with Tunde. From what I've seen Tunde seems just fine of a lecturer, although again this is based on a very limited amount of experience with her. In either case Calc III isn't a hard class.

oh yeah, and also, take both before you think about taking diffq.

I think either prof is fine for astr 121.

You can take math 231, 325 and 351 in any order you please.

Thanks for the info. Anybody know anything about Ira Herbst? I'm getting conflicting reviews.

check out this website: www.ratemyprofessors.com
you can browse by school, or the professor's last name. It will give you reviews on the individual professor from students who took the class...I found it really useful =) hope it helps!

Yeah I've been using that and two other review websites.
