Math 20B without 20A

i just looked over past final exams for the different math classes (i.e., math 20a-math 20f), and i have to admit, even though i scored a 5 on the ab exam, i didn't feel ready to tackle math 20b and beyond.

they had sample problems on ucsd's math club site...

how about if i got a 3 in AP Calc AB exam, but a 1 in AP Calc BC exam, and subscore 2? oh yes, and i had a horrible (and i mean HORRIBLE) teacher for calculus (had him for AB and BC). should i still take 20A or just skip right to 20B?

in order to skip 20a we have to have taken the AP test?

take 20a soybrains...

if you all look through the math dept archives for teacher's websites, you can find old tests/finals from teachers. search for eggers...i know he puts those up. then you can compare 20A and 20B tests and see if you really are prepared or not. they are in the archives for fall and winter 2006. i think getting about an 85% is an A so don't worry too much if you're falling below. For my 20A class, 70% was a B-, at least, on the first exam.

take 20b soybrains

Trust. Calc AB in high school overlaps into 20B at SD. Not a whole lot (maybe 2 or so). you'll be prepared

ucsdhopeful, where are the teacher's websites? i want to go check them out. i was actually thinking of taking 20A because if i got a 2 in the the BC subscore, that means i forgot a lot of my Calc AB stuff right?

Liux43, 20B overlaps with AB? what do you mean? like what do they cover? differential equations/antiderivatives? the easy stuff or... volumes, lots of BC stuff like the power series and etc.? i think since it's summer, i forgot a lot of my calculus. -____-;; but being ahead is good too, i guess. i know it's surprising with my low scores, but i really love math. i'm PASSIONATE about math. i just can't take tests lol.

how much does BC overlap with 20B?

I think BC completely covers all of 20A and 20B and overlaps into 20C, but i don't know how much b/c I did not take BC

The first 2 weeks of 20B is line integrals, area btwn 2 curves, volume by slicing, volume by using washer method. That's about it. I don't believe AB has power series and all those other series crap, but I know 20B does.

TAKE 20B

enjoy: <a href="http://www.math.ucsd.edu/%7Ejeggers/Archive/2006fall.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.math.ucsd.edu/~jeggers/Archive/2006fall.html</a>
<a href="http://www.math.ucsd.edu/%7Ejeggers/Archive/2007winter.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.math.ucsd.edu/~jeggers/Archive/2007winter.html</a></p>

scroll down a bit and you will find the old tests.

wait, is 20A and 20B only for one quarter?

and ucsdhopeful, thanks for the websites! i just checked them out. it seems like i know some of 20A and 20B. =\ what is your reason for telling me that i should take 20A instead of 20B?

and liux, you're right about having high school AP Calulus mixed into 20B. is 20B terribly hard?

because:

good review, esp. if u haven't taken calc in a while

got a 3 ab subscore but still thought 20a was interesting in parts. in the beginning i thought the class was realli hard but studied a lot and got an A+.

good gpa booster ;)

i took 20a-c, i'd rank them as b>c>a...i didn't do that well in hs calc. B-/C+ for the semesters, so i figured that i should take the class over for all those reasons above. i have friends who skipped into 20b and 20c...they didn't do too well because some were not as well prepared. so make sure you can score, say, an 80-85% on the 20a final (for an A) before committing to taking 20b

take what you want to take, if you have to take up to 20f, i suggest you just skip 20a to reduce the math load. otherwise, if you only need to go up to 20c, just take 20a. my $0.02

20B is annoying. Explanation? No, It's just annoying. Skip 20A and take 20B, you WILL NOT regret it. TRUST.

BUT THE A MEANS ITS EASIER THEN THE B.. no?

I dunno, I regret it. I fcked around so much my fall quarter I wish I took this class just I could've still passed even when I fcked around.

20a: functions, limits, derivatives, optimization, reimann sums
20b: integrals, crazy integral s--- like taking the integral of imaginary numbers, power series, taylor series, intro to diffeq

again! your choice, but i did not regret taking 20a again. i had people to study with since more people were taking 20a fall quarter, i had a good prof...

tieniscoolx: a was easier than b, but c was easier than b. as i said, i ranked them as b>c>a and i think most people would agree (and if not, it would be b>a>c)...higher letter/number does not imply difficulty level.

so B is the hardest? oh gosh, I was hoping to get out of as many math courses as I can...

20B! 20B! C was easier than B, but I actually did better in B than C. I did good in C but my professors grading system was a bit harsh.

well i was planning to major in math... but i don't wanna just assume i know a lot of calculus because once again, i probably forgot a lot of it. but if i'm gonna be a math major, then i most likely have to take up to 20F... can't i just take one of the 20 series at a community college during the summer? =</p>

ucsdhopeful, i agree with the "Good review" because what if i go to 20B and the professor assumes that i know a whole bunch of calculus so he/she moves right on ahead to something i probably won't remember?

i'm stressed out. :(

this might be a little late, but when you first register as an incoming freshman, they don't care how many units you have. first quarter is random, and only after that they look at units.
