Math 218: Probability For Business?

Just a few general questions: Is this class easy? Does it require alot of study time outside of class? Any suggestions for professor to take?

Can you get credit for this class even if you are not a business major with a score of 5 on AP Statistics?

In order to bypass the class, you have to have a score of 4 or higher in both AP Statistics and AP Calculus (statistics alone isn’t sufficient, for some reason).

I thought the class meeting schedule was pretty awful: five days a week, for an hour every day. Many 218 professors also give weekly quizzes and/or homework problems. It made me feel like being in high school again.

The material, though, is manageable. If you go to class and keep up, you’ll be fine. Definitely anticipate some out-of-class preparation, but nothing too dramatic. (Not as bad as calculus, for instance.)

A warning though: it starts out really easy and basic. But it gets more difficult pretty suddenly and abruptly. So a lot of people are caught off guard…

My son has a score of 5 on both AP Statsitics and AP Calculus BC. Since he is mostly getting elective credit, I wonder if he can get credit for Probability for Business. If yes, how does this class show up on the USC transcript? Also, does this class count if you decide to become a combined CS/Business major or CS/Business minor?

Not sure if you can get credit if your not a business major, since the class is designed for business majors.
But if 218 is required for the combined CS/Business major, then it should count.
Has your son checked his transcript on OASIS? It should have the details of any transfer credits (AP/comm. college).

As far as the class goes, not easy but doable. Just find what works for you. I was lucky enough to get in the MW lec, TTH dis so no fridays :)
Lecture notes were given ahead of time, but it was helpful to go to class because the prof. went through the problems.
Around March I starting having trouble (as in I had to do more than just go to class), so I started going to SI sections. Found that to be so much more helpful than lecture, so for all of April, I didn't go to class, just went to SI and the discussions for the weekly quiz. This actually worked out well because lectures were insanely boring and I would've easily given up caring about this class. I suggest you get this class out of the way as soon as can. And the prof doesn't really matter...they all go over the same stuff, def. go to SI sections, those kids have taken the class before and done well so they know how to answer questions because they had the same ones when they took the class.
