Math 231?

Is this an easy calculus class???

I took AP calc ab/bc two years ago and got a 5, but havent taken any math since then. I know i place out of math 231 with this, but should i take it or go straight on to math 232?

Any recommendations would be highly appreciated!

Skip 232, as well, and go on to Math 233. I was in the same situation, and I moved on to 233. I did not feel disadvantaged in the slightest.

I also have a question about taking Math 231; perhaps someone could help me out.

I took the SAT Math Subject test II in May, and I am certain that I got above a 600, so I should place into 231. However, my CTOPS is before I get the official results back. I really want to take MATH 231 in the fall so that I can take PSYC 215 in the spring (basically, I want to take it so I can expediently take the required classes for my major).

Is it in any way possible to sign up for MATH 231 without having my scores yet? Really; only if you’re sure. I do not want get in trouble or go through a bunch of paperwork for trying to sign up for a class when I don’t have the placement score yet. Should I wait until I can drop courses in August? Do you think there will be MATH 231 classes available to sign up then? Thanks!

You’re not going to be able to sign up for the course at CTOPS if you do not have a placement score on file. Don’t worry about getting a seat in a MATH 231, though; there are always plenty of seats that open up during add/drop.

graj08…thank you for the quick response!..did you also not take math for two years though?? that is what kind of makes me hesitant…i mean maybe if i take my old barrons book and skim through it i can manage but im still iffy…im going to be a biochemistry major and i have to tkae math 231, 232, 233, and 383 plus 12378567493672092 Chem classes so it would be to my advantage to save up spaces for the chem classes, but i dont want to flunk by taking the higher level classes. Also…i need phys 116 and 117 for bicohemsetry and the pre req is Math 231 and Math 232 respectively…should this be a concern???

Thanks!!!

Mary, it really depends on you. If you passed the AP Calculus BC class, you also place out of Math 232. That is the most dropped, most failed class at UNC if I remember correctly, and at a lot of universities. So if you can, you should go ahead and place out of as many math classes as you can, especially if you can get out of 232.

I took the Calc BC exam in 11th grade, so there was 1 year in between math classes.

Don’t worry about being rusty. Once you start doing it, it will all come back. I would recommend taking the credit, and moving on to Math 233. Ultimately, it has little to do with Math 232.

The PHYS classes’ prereqs will be filled by your AP credit

Maziana, you probably won’t be able to get into Psyc 215 for the spring as a freshman. The class has one section with 30 people in it, and by the time I went to sign up for it (for fall sophomore year) it had a waitlist bigger than the actual class.

Ah, really? Thanks, phonyreal.

Wow, I just realized I’m in the same situation as you Maziana, and I didn’t realize it. I took Cal II at my local university senior year of high school, and am taking Cal III now, nearly two years later. I feel old. Sigh. But I haven’t had any trouble with Cal III, so hopefully you won’t either. Just spend a couple of hours going through your barron’s review book and you should be fine.
