I was looking at the schedule for fall 2013, and it looks like Chayes is the only professor whose math 32a class would work with my schedule. I've seen some pretty bad reviews on Bruinwalk, though, so I was wondering how difficult he actually is and whether it would be worth taking the class. I took Calc BC junior year and got a 5, but I haven't done math since then so I'm worried I wouldn't remember anything.

I'm hoping to enroll in CS1, CS31, Math 32A, and Physics 1A next fall (incoming CS major). I'd really not want to get lower than a B+ in math 32A; is this doable?

If I instead choose to take Math 31B instead, I would probably have to be in the 8am class and wouldn't be able to take Physics 1A. I don't think I want to waste that much time though and I'd rather get these prereqs out of the way.

Thoughts? Thanks so much!

It is math department policy that a minimum of 50% of students must be in A or B range for the 30 series. No matter how lousy the professor is, this is constant. Usually, I’ve seen top 25% equate to an A, next 25% a B.

This class isn’t too hard and you can easily study it from the book. I definitely don’t recommend retaking 31b. You should be fine in this class. You’ll mainly be competing against Freshmen, all of which got at least a 5 on Calculus BC. Just study hard and do your best.

I’ve found that as an engineer, it is a waste of time to fret over professors. Most classes are in the MWF format so there will be tons of conflicts. You also have to consider the fact that the better professors will have their classes filled early so get used to not having the perfect schedule.

okay, thanks! I come from a pretty competitive high school (~95% of people in my BC class got 5s) so hopefully 32A won’t be much different.

Just wondering, how did you get credit for Math 31b? If you’re an incoming computer science (college of engineering) major, a 5 in calculus BC only gives you credit for Math 31A. Did you take it at a community college?

I thought you get exempt from 31a and you get 4 excess credits that you can choose to be exempted from 31b as well? idk it’s not very clear.

this explains it a little better (unless they’ve changed their policy??0

anyways with the finals schedules I wouldn’t be able to take math with Chayes anyways haha so disregard this question now
