Math 340H

I just found out that I am eligible to take it, any suggestions on whether I should or should not? (I am an engineering major btw)

How did you find out you’re eligible to take it?

Were you really strong in Math? AP Calc BC? Recently? If so, you’re probably OK. D took the 240/241 series, and although they weren’t her favorite classes, she was neither bored nor over her head, and got A’s in both. She’s in MAT461 now.

I called up the undergraduate math adviser, and told her my scores (5 on the BC, 780 on the SAT I, and 800 on the Math 2C Sat II). Also, I found out from her that to officially be able to enroll I need to send my AP scores, so if you or your D/S has a 5 on the BC its worth sending int eh score if ur interested.

I think you’ll still need to take the math placement test, when they send you the logon info, etc. before orientation (unless they’ve changed it in the past 2 years). However, it doesn’t matter what you score, if you’ve got the AP credit for the cal BC exam, that trumps whatever score you get on the math placement test. (altho you’ll probably ace the placement test, too).

Take it only if you consider math to be one of your strong subjects. MATH340/MATH341 is essentially MATH240, MATH241, and MATH246 condensed into 2 semesters, and I’ve heard it involves a lot more proofs than the 3-course sequence of math classes. If you’re worried about grade distribution, search the class at ourumd.com

If you skip MATH140 or MATH240 series because your AP score high enough, will UMD convert your AP score from 4, 5 to A, B, C,… in MATH 140 or MATH 240 and calculate your GPA with it. Thanks for the answer.

If you plan to take math beyond this sequence (i.e. 400-level analysis), the 340 series would be good preparation, as Math 410 is the big analysis course with lots of proof work. On the other hand, if you are taking a bunch of other heavy engineering classes and this is the last math sequence you need, the 240s may be fine.

We kow lots of students with very strong BC Calc preparation and top math scores who did 340/341 and did quite well.
