Even after pestering them repeatedly, UMD won't let me take MATH340/341 because I received a 750 and not a 760 on the SAT. Would MATH340 really be that vastly different (material wise) then if I just took Math240, Math241H, and Math246H this year? I am an Electrical Engineering/Math major (math is my real passion), so it was kind of a defeat that they wouldn't let me take the highest level class. But I won't let them refuse me a high level of education...

According to my friends who took 340, it was a huge pain and they didnt feel they necessarily learned everything well enough. Just take them seperately, its a lot less stressful, and take a summer/winter course if you are worried about not getting ahead.

Also, you should take MATH461 instead of 240 if youre an engineer.

Yeah, but 2 things:1. I plan on being to double major in math as well, and 2. I plan to take Math240 first semester, and you have to take some sort of math class other than Calculus 1 & 2 to take MATH461

Take the classes separately. I took MATH340/341 and I am double majoring in comp sci/math and I still wish I had taken the 240/241/246 sequence instead.

If you want reasons, you don’t use Matlab in 340/341 and they SPEED through the material. Many of the students (myself included) took some form of Calc III/Linear Algebra in high school already, so they could afford to speed through for SOME of the students. Also, the textbook sucks.

It could be a blessing in disguise. Like EddieD said, many students who I went to orientation with and who are in the 340/341 sequence already have exposure to multivariable calculus and linear algebra. I was also denied acceptance to 340 because of a 750 SAT Math score, but I’m not worried anymore because I don’t have any previous exposure to MV or Linear algebra.

xckyle, to your point about needing a class other than calc1/2 for 461, most people will take calc 3 first semester, then 246/461 second semester.

I missed the math major thing. Youll have to check the math major requirements to see if 461 is applicable to the major.
