I'll try to make this brief (I usually rant). Last week I called the math department and asked if I could sign up for Math 340/341. They said no because my SAT's were too low (I have a 750 in math). I asked what the cut off was and they said 760. This frustrates me because the only difference between a 750 and a 760 is the date on which you take the SAT's. I have a friend who who scored a 760 with the same number of questions wrong, she just happened to take the SAT's this May instead of last November. Anyhow, I believe that I am qualified to take this class for some other mathematically relevant reasons that I am not going to state in this initial post. What can I possibly do to make them reconsider?

Who did you speak with? You should check with the academic advisor for mathematics, or send an email directly with the professor who teaches the class. If you can get permission from the prof to take the class, you should be able to evaluate at the beginning (and after looking at the syllabus) as to whether you think you are ready for the class or not.

I think that I spoke with Ms. Ida Chan, who is the coordinator of Undergraduate Advising. She definitely wasn’t very helpful though… She just said “A bunch of people with 750’s asked the same thing as you did” (paraphrasing of course), which, tbh, I don’t really believe. It kinda of irked me to be honest.

Check to see who is teaching it at a time that most likely will work for you (you may want to look at ourumd.com to see who has taught it the most) and try to contact them. Also, because it is a higher level math course, it is more likely that you may be able to add it once class starts (these are the ones that people tend to drop early if they’ve realized that it’s a higher level than they are ready for.) Good luck.

Wooooooowwwwwww UMD amazes me to no end…

Trust me xckyle93, I was a “test date” away from an additional $23,000…so you’re not the only one that’s frustrated.

What was the next higher SAT math score for the date you took the SAT’s, xckyle? i.e. you got a 750. If you had missed one less question, do you know what your score would have been? This might be useful knowledge in speaking with the professor.

Maybe it’s a blessing. Our son took that class first semester freshman year It was a fast moving class. He got a B+, only B on his transcript. Having mononucleosis for much of the semester didn’t help either.
