Math 350

I’m thinking of taking Math 350 next year (as a current prefrosh most likely going to major in mathematics). Does anyone have anything to say about this course?

One of my counselors at the mathematics summer program PROMYS advised me to actually not take Math 350, as he said it is “a poorly-designed attempt to teach multivariable calculus and introductory real analysis at the same time, resulting in doing a poor job of both.” I’d actually like to not take Math 350 (mostly for the sake of adding in an extra class :D), but I’m afraid that without a course like Math 350, I won’t have the necessary background in Multivar for classes like physics (which I’m also interested in).

Valid question. But unless you’re somehow getting transfer credits for SOME multivariable class, how else are you going to fulfill your multi credit requirement (assuming your intended concentration will have some sort of math (pre)requisite)? That is, unless you were planning on taking MA18 or MA20 instead.

Anyways… I’m also only a prefrosh so advice by a former MA35 student would certainly be appreciated on (our) OP’s behalf. If not - OP, have you tried thecriticalreview?

The instructors for all calculus and linear algebra courses change all the time, so if you’re checking the Critical Review, make sure that you look at the right person.

In any case, movement between MATH 18, 20 and 35 is very fluid during shopping period. You can start off attending 35, and if you feel that it’s not for you, switch to 20 or 18 instead, both of which will more than adequately prepare you for any physics classes you want to take,

If you’re going to major in mathematics, then 35 is probably the right choice. But it’s certainly still possible to do 18/20 and then 52/54 and 101 and still be fine as a math major.
