Math and Physics

I have only taken one course of Physics and that too when I was in ninth grade. I haven't taken either AP or IB Physics. Harvey Mudd's core has a lot of Physics, and I was wondering if I will be at a disadvantage because of a lack of prior education in the subject. I am interested and will definitely put in the hard work required... but does the intensity of the class require some familiarity and comfort with the subject matter?

In addition, my math has been limited to about the Calculus AB level (I take IB Math HL). Again, is this a bad thing, or can I catch up and earn good grades with hard work?

Thanks!

Why not do a little physics and math refresher in your summer? Just for fun.

It sounds like you’ve at least met the baseline of needed experience. You wouldn’t be able to pass out of any math/physics courses and the first few you take would probably be difficult (depending on how naturally the material comes to you), but you should be able to do fairly well with some effort.

@iTransient I totally worry too, because I haven’t got any background in coding and the CS classes in the Core are scaring me. But we’ll work it out somehow :)

fiona, I think they place you in a specific sub section of the class based on your previous CS experience. So it’s totally ok if you don’t have any experience. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

This is right – there are essentially just two CS courses for freshmen (5 and 42), but CS5 is divided into two sections (gold and black) wherein freshmen are placed based on their experience.

Is 42 still offered? It’s not in my catalogue.

Should be. As I understand it, 65 more or less branched off from 60 last year as a frosh class, and this year they renamed it to 42 since pass/fail courses are supposed to be numbered <50. It shows up on the online 5C catalog… perhaps you’re looking at an older list?

@iTransient: “Again, is this a bad thing, or can I catch up and earn good grades with hard work?”

trick question, no one does well in frosh physics ;)

Hmm, it was the one they gave us at ASP this weekend (I will be attending next year!! ) I guess it might be a mistake.
