Math and Spanish Placement Exams

Does anyone have any information about placement exams. I understand that I am required to take the math placement exam even though I already took M119 through the ACP program. I also thought I previously heard that there is no way to test out of M118 Finite, so what is the point of me taking the math placement test and does my score matter?

Also, I took 3 years of Spanish in high school/middle school, but I quit after sophomore year and I haven’t done any Spanish since then. Will the test be impossible for me, or will I have a chance to get credit? I still remember some stuff from Spanish, but obviously I have forgotten a lot. If anyone has any information at all, please share

Somebody please help

Somebody HAS to know something about this! If you have anything, please post

the spanish placement exam wasn’t too bad from what i remember. it was like multiple choice with a mix of audio recordings. if you have the credit for m119 then you’ll be fine.

I don’t think there are any majors that wouldn’t take M119 as your required entry level math course. They usually say M118 or equivalent or above. So, M119 will fulfill that requirement. But, you still may have to take the math placement exam to figure out your next math course. It won’t hurt you to do so.

The Spanish placement exam may be difficult if you don’t remember much from two years ago. It might be worth it to brush up using one of the free internet based learning programs such as Duolingo. If you search, you’ll find several free language learning options.

You can’t get free or “special” credit for any Spanish classes at IUB through the placement exam unless you test into IUB’s fourth semester (S250) Spanish or higher. Then you would have to take S250 and get a solid “C” or higher and then apply for free or “special” credit for S200. There is no free or special credit for first year Spanish based on placement exam performance.

Do the best you can on the math placement test, because some people do not score high enough on it in order to take freshman level classes like M118 and M119 until they have passed IUB non-credit math classes like M-014 http://registrar.indiana.edu/browser/soc4158/MATH/MATH-M14.shtml. You may be exempt from having to take a non-credit class in order to qualify to take M118 since you have credit for M119, but I don’t know for certain if you would.

There is no way that I will test well enough to take a 4th semester Spanish class, so there probably isn’t any point of preparing. I was planning on taking WC courses for the gen ed requirements anyway. I will definitely try on the math test and I am pretty solid in math so I’m not worried about being ineligible for M118. Thanks for the information though.
