I'm considering double major or minor in math/applied math. But since uppder division math courses are supposed to be incredibly difficult, i'm a bit scared that taking upper div. math courses would lower my g.p.a.

Are these courses also curved around a "C."

I wouldn't worry too much. Everyone says such and such courses are impossible, but everyone has to take them, and people do well. Just take what you want to take. Avoid bad professors, but "hard" classes is really a misleading concept.

math/applied math ppls! what math class are you guys taking (or what did u take) for your first semester at berk? Also any suggestions for a first upper division class that won't completely kill me? and is taking math 74 (transition to upper math) a good idea? thanks in advance.

whoa! math 110 and 113 over the summer?! plz don't tell me you're an incoming frosh! i'm going to be taking math 54 for my first semester... does that put me behind the curve of "typical" cal math students?

Yeesh, calm down. Math 54 is fine. I'm no math major, but for any math/science/engineering that requires real math, Math 53 & 54 are a good starting point (or 1A/1B if you're lacking APs).

I'd say lower division math courses are tough because of the curve. I did worse in my lower div math than my lower division EE and CS courses, but then again I'm probably a little worse at math than EE and CS. I can't speak on behalf of upper division courses, but let me tell you people always complain about upper div EECS being hard and it isn't really. So relax, people.

i'm a commmunity college transfer :) and one who's pretty behind. I was doing pre-calc 1 year ago. now that i've decided to go into math, i'm trying to pull off (the second half of math 53) + (math 54) in one quarter.

110 + 113 an okay workload for the summer? only 8 units, right?
