I am going to be a freshmen at Stony Brook University next year. I got a 3 on the AP Calculus BC exam and a 4 on the Calculus AB subscore. Does that mean I am still required to take the math assessment test?

Yes, take it before orientation.

it says on the Stony Brook website that a 4 on calc AB or BC makes you exempt from taking the assesment. My question is “Is the Calculus AB subscore good enough or does it have to be the actual Calculus Ab exam?”

since they say a 4 on calc AB or BC, i would think it would have to be on the actual exam. otherwise they would give a subscore value, since the AB exam tests concepts that the BC does not, and vice versa. but just to make sure (since i may very well be wrong–im just trying to think logically), i would shoot them a quick email or call the office tomorrow afternoon. it’s worth it if you can get out of taking it.

Placement is based on your exam score. We usually recommend students take the test, especially if you need calc for your major/career plan. There are a number of ways to get through the Calc I-II sequence here; your math assessment score, for example, might place you into Calc A (part of the three-semester Calc A-B-C sequence); maybe you’re not a strong calc student and could use the class that goes slightly slower. Or maybe you say no, I can do it, I just had a bad morning the day of the AP test, and you can use your AP score to override your assessment score. There are a lot of variables that really pertain to your specific situation. Doesn’t hurt to take the exam, though.
