Math Classes. Also: Is it important to take the AP Computer Science A Test?

Hello.

Let me explain my situation. I am a junior in high school. My middle school put us on the fast track for math classes... This was a problem though since I've always been horrible at math! So basically I did Algebra I as a 7th grader, Geometry as an 8th grader, Algebra II as a freshman with a C in the class, Trg/PreCal as a sophomore with an A both semesters, and now Computer Science as a junior with a B+ first semester, aiming for an A this semester (and I think I will take Stats/Intro to Engineering next year).

My first question is does this matter too bad? Take my grades into account please. Will my C freshman year count drastically? Is a B for Computer Science also bad? Keep in mind, Computer Science is just an elective, not even a substitute for a math class. And I plan on marketing myself in my college apps as someone more into the humanities, things like political science, etc. I plan on never doing anything revolving around math or science or computers ever again. So, in this sense, is it okay that I didn't take Calc? Or that I got the grades I got in the classes I took?

My second and more pressing question is, I don't want to take the Computer Science AP exam. I know for a fact that I will NOT do well. No matter if I start studying now, I am horrible at problem solving and my teacher is not preparing us at all. It's an AP class... but honestly I think it would be better to just save the trouble and not take the AP exam. What do you think? I have heard that it looks bad to take an AP class and then not do the test... but I mean what's the point in spending $86 only to fail?

Other than that, I get all A's (at least sophomore and junior year thus far). I am involved in sufficient community service outside of school, internships, projects, stuff with the city gov, etc. I can write a good college application essay. I am also in English III AP and AP Enviro Science. Next year I'll be in AP Gov, English IV AP, Spanish IV AP, etc. I haven't taken the SAT yet, but I am aiming to get somewhere in the 2000s, and I am taking a class so that this will be possible.

I am looking into schools such UC Berkeley (that'd be my number one, honestly). UC Santa Cruz UCLA, USC are also options. But then I also want to get into things like U Seattle, Santa Clara, Notre Dame de Namur, Pacific, etc.

How are things looking for me? Is my math track (and substitutions for math classes) okay considering I don't want to do anything with math in college and I won't be marketing myself as such? Also, please let me know if I should take the AP Computer Science test and how bad it will look.

Thanks.

As far as colleges go … doing badly on the APCS-A test won’t count against you. Frankly, a lot of students don’t even get the opportunity to take APCS-A, so schools can’t “require” a good APCS-A score as a qualifier for admittance.
