Math courses during high school

I’m wondering, what’s the “average” math course for each grade level in high school? I want to know California’s standard math course for each level and the United States’ standard. (e.g. X math in 9th, Y math in 10th, Z math in 11th, and T math in 12th). Accelerated classes would then move up each math class to another grade level.

Hey -

I was in California for part of highschool.

Normal progression was geometry - algebra 2 - pre calc - calculus AB

Accelerated went up one, and a handful skipped over pre-cal in addition to having taken geometry in highschool, making room for a college class/no math senior year

  • hope that helps

In NY standard is:
9th - Algebra
10th - Geometry
11th - Algebra 2/ Trig
12th - Precalc

Accelerated kids start algebra in either 7th or 8th grade, depending on what districts allow.

In CT (at least my town) it’s
9 - Geometry
10 - Algebra II
11 - Pre-Calc
12 - Calc

or…
9 - Algebra I
10 - Geometry
11 - Algebra II
12 - Trig/Stats/Probabiltiy/Pre-Calc

At my kids CA high school “normal” was
9 - Algebra I
10 - Geometry
11 - Algebra II
12 - Trig/Stats/Probabiltiy/Pre-Calc

However fairly “normal” for most high achievers was
9 - Geometry
10 - Algebra II
11 - Pre-Calc
12 - Calc

But a handful would accelerate even further by starting with Alg II in 9th grade and might take Stats in 12th.

Of course, now with common core the classes are called Math 1, Math : etc. and since my kids are graduated I haven’t kept up with what is covered in each level.

9 - Algebra I
10 - Geometry
11 - Algebra II
12 - Pre-calc

Most accelerated people I know do:

9 - Algebra II
10 - Pre-Calc
11 - Calc AB or BC
12 - Calc BC or MVC

One of my friends is taking MVC in 11th, though.

There’s a thread for this called “What’s your high school’s accelerated math sequence?”.These are the main offerings at my school (In NJ)

Normal:
9: Algebra 1
10: (Honors) Geometry
11: (Honors) Algebra 2
12: Trig/PreCalc or Trig/Analyt (Honors)

For accelerated, Algebra 1 is taken in 8th grade and the sequence ends with Honors or AP Calc AB/BC (If you take regular, you go to Honors/AB. If you are in honors, you can chose from Honors/AP AB/AP BC). For x2 accelerated, BC is taken in 11th followed by AP Stats in 12th, or both are taken 11th. Alternatively, AB is taken 11th and BC & Stats in 12th, or in any combination, really. There are other (lower level) math classes, but those are mostly taken by seniors and some juniors on occasion.

I live in MA and most kids do:

9th: Algebra 1
10th: Geometry
11th: Algebra 2
12th: Precalc, Stats, or some other random math course like business math.

A lot of kids also went a step ahead and completed AP Calc AB as a senior and two or three kids each year went two steps ahead of what I posted above and completed AP Calc AB junior year and AP Stats senior.

Regular for us is:
9th: Alg I
10th: Geometry
11th: Alg II
12th: Pre Calc

We have so many other options and routes that I’m not even going to try to list them all.

I’m not really sure what’s the regular timeline, but typically there are 3 paths:

Path 1:
9th - Geometry
10th - Algebra 2
11th - Application in Advanced Mathematics OR Math Analysis
12th - Pre-Calc Honors OR AP Statistics
This path, of course, is assuming the person takes all four years of math, though I’m guessing the average person at my school who takes this path will not take all four years due to lack of motivation for math.

Path 2:
9th - Algebra 2
10th - Math Analysis
11th - AP Calculus AB / Pre-Calc Honors
12th - AP Statistics (If prev. taken AB) / AP Calculus BC (If prev. taken Pre-Calc. Honors)
Once again, this is assuming the person takes all four years of math.

Path 3:
9th - Algebra 2 / Trigonometry
10th - Pre-Calculus Honors
11th - AP Calculus BC
12th - AP Statistics
This is the route I’m taking, so I’m assuming this is the route for more advanced math students.

As stated prev., I am taking Path 3, so these timelines might be tentative.

In our school, the ‘official’ pathways were:

Remedial:
9th- Algebra I
10th - Geometry
11th- Algebra II
12th- Pre-Calc

Normal:
9th- Geometry
10th- Alegbra II
11th- Pre-calc
12th- No math class (only ~15% of seniors took Calc, and we didn’t have stats)

Rigorous:
9th -Honor Geometry & Geometry Mathematics Lab
10th - Honors Algebra II
11th - Honors Pre-calc
12th- AP Calc AB

Although my school offered honors classes, they were not UC certified, so I’m not sure how rigorous they were compared to other schools. The highest level math my school offered was Calc AB, in my time there.

This past year, they implemented a different accelerated program:
9th - Honors Geometry & Geometry Mathematics Lab
10th - Honors Algebra II
11th - Honors Pre-Calc & AP Calc AB
12th- ???

They followed a college semester schedule with pre-calc and calc AB taking up half a year each. Although, I’m not exactly sure what classes they offered for senior year. Never really found out.

Just saying. This thread already exsists in the AP Math forum. Look before you post.

So where I live the standard is:
Algebra 1 A/B - 8th grade
(H) geometry A/B - 9th grade
(H) algebra 2 A/B - 10th grade
(H) Precalculus A/B - 11th grade
AP Calc AB/BC A/B - 12th grade

We’re set to be at least one level ahead.
I’m two levels ahead so I’m a freshman taking Honors Algebra 2 A/B. Few people are three levels ahead so they’re in Honors Precalculus a/b in freshman year.
