Math Credit Question

Well the question is pretty simple I got a 3 on AP Calc AB. I was suprised, I expected at least a 4 if not a 5 (I am confident about my calculus). Nevertheless, I know I can bypass Math 1A and go to Math 1B (as I had planned) but Berkeley recommends (if one gets a 3) to take Math 1A. Should I take Math 1A or if I don't is it gonna be too hard pull an A in Math 1B then?

Note: I have already enrolled in Physics 7A which has Math 1A as a pre-quesite.

It depends, but given the information you provided only, it doesn’t sound like you should take 1B. Your schedule is almost a parallel to your AP score. That is, you’re confident you can pass Math 1A just like how you were confident you would get at least a 4 on the AP test. This is all I know about you. Maybe the AP test was a fluke. Maybe it wasn’t.

Also, if you absolutely want to enroll in Physics 7A, you pretty much have to be taking 1B despite any other concern. If you being in Physics 7A doesn’t matter that much, then you could always drop it and enroll in another class.

hmm I woudl take 187’s comment into consideration but perhaps try taking a Math 1A final and see how you do: [Index of /examfiles](http://tbp.berkeley.edu/examfiles/)

I got a 5 on the calc AB and a 4 (I expected a 5…) on the BC and it says Kids with a 4 on the BC should take 1B and not move on to 53 But when i took a past year Berkeely 1B final, I almost got a perfect score so I’ve decided to enroll in 53 especially since I’ve also taken a multi-variable class already, so I’d recommend you try the practice testsin that link above.

Diivio thanks men this is a great idea! That seems like a great link but there seems to be no math 1A final. If anyone can pinpoint me there that will be awesome.

Diivio I am curious what gpa did you get on Math 53? Did you did dedicate more time that other core courses and/or have to review previous material, if so, where?

I think he’s taking 53 now, thus the “I have decided” rather than “I had decided”.

Thanks Maharba, but since I haven’t taken any course and thus any exam I have 0 karma and can’t see the tests. lol

[Math 1A Fall 2009](http://math.berkeley.edu/~reb/1A)

Lol no My Calc BC teacher spent the first have of our senior year teaching BC stuff for hte AP BC test and the second semester teaching multivariable differentiation and integration (lots of 3D drawing involved) and ended with Jacobians. But yeah right prolly the week or few days before i heard off to Berkeley, I’ll review all my calc 2 (BC) concepts just to make sure I have my advance integration techniques, convergence/divergence stuff, and the Power series (Taylor series) perfected before heading into Math 53 at Berkeley this fall. So I suggest if you want to take Math 1B, make sure you have all the Math 1A stuff down by getting a work book and practicing problems, but make sure you also understand the concepts behind them well enough to do the proofs since I’m guessing Berkeley will be more proof based since it’s a competitive university and what not. Do that and make sure you keep on track in your 1B class this fall and I think that you should be fine. Take Care!

@Diivio: Thanks for your advice and support, I appreciate it. I think I will do a few Math 1A tests and review to take Math 1B and hopefully ace it!

@HelloAll: Can you tell me or teach me were you find those very useful websites on classes, so I can find it for the other classes I am taking this fall?
