Math Department Scholars Program

I was looking through the math department website and saw the option to possibly graduate in 4 years with a BS and MA. Is this at all common? Is it even still possible? It looks like a lot of things on their website are out of date.

On a related note, would it be possible to take 32B and 33A at the same time?

Yes, it is possible, but from what I’ve heard, it’s very difficult to get into that program. It takes the best of the best as much as 6 months to get approved. As for how common it is, I have no idea.

And yes, I know several people who took those two together.

I’m hoping to get into that program for next year, but one negative for me is that I never get to take any electives. Ever. Just too many units. Plus the classes in preparation are really, really, really hard, even if you are mathematically inclined.

I noticed that electives problem. It seems like the second year would be almost entirely math classes.

So how does the approval process work? The website makes it sound like you basically need a certain GPA in certain classes as well as a passing score on the basic qualifying exam (all of which is easier said than done). Do they exercise more discretion than that?

bumped because I’m still curious

Obviously it’s more complicated than that…
