Math dominant at Tufts?

Hello everyone.
I've visited Tufts recently, and I really love the school.
That my sister was admitted also bolstered my interest in the school, because I know that it's not impossible.

Anyways, getting to my point:
My sister believed that math was a primary focus at Tufts, and desiring to study the humanities, she decided against attending.
Now, I'd love to attend Tufts (if I'm accepted, of course); however, I'd like to major in the humanities and not have to take that many (if any) math/science related courses.

Is my sister right about math at Tufts?
Can I still be happy as a humanities major there?

I’m not sure where your sister got the impression that Math was a primary focus at the school. If anything, humanities is the focus (International Relations is the most popular major at Tufts). I would say that the mathematics program isn’t particularly strong here.

As a math major at Tufts, I would have to disagree with the statement that the math program isn’t strong here.

But as leprostaist said, IR is certainly very popular at Tufts, as are (to my knowledge) economics, English, poli sci, psychology, etc. In terms of sciences, biology is very common. But LOTS of people are humanities majors (certainly not the minority) and all of my friends are very happy. As a side note, do you like languages? That’s a big emphasis at Tufts.

In terms of classes the OP would have to take: Tufts requires that you take 2 mathematical sciences and 2 natural sciences. That isn’t to say that you have to take calculus and chemistry and physics (because, as a math major, I hate science!). There are many different ways to get out of taking hard sciences - astronomy, geology, some psych classes (animal learning, physiological psych, etc)… you should be able to find something that interests you. As for math, you could take “math of social choice,” statistics, etc. Here’s a link to all of the classes that fulfill distribution requirements, so you can see what interests you: <a href=“Tufts User Authentication - Stale Request”>Tufts User Authentication - Stale Request; Also if you’ve done APs/IB in high school, that could place you out of lots of stuff.

Thanks! I guess my sister didn’t look very carefully when she was evaluating her choices.
She told me that math/engineering was one of the more renowned programs and that the school focuses heavily on math/science related areas.

Also, yes, I don’t really like math and science, so if I’m accepted and choose to attend, I’ll definitely look for classes that can fulfill those requirements.

i placed out of my Math and Science requirements and am never taking a math or science course again. And I don’t need to either (i do use it in some of my Economics courses tho). That help?

Wow, your sister was very uninformed or made ridiculous assumptions…
