I started preparing for my SAT IIs in Chem, Physics and Math I because Harvard apparently needs 3 subject tests. Now that I've actually bought the books, I realized I don't know whether Princeton, Harvard and Yale wants you to take the Math I or Math II. So I looked up the SAT IIs in their sites but there is no indication whatsoever as to which one they want prospective students to do. I've completed courses on the content of both. Can anyone help me on this? Do I really need to do the Math II or is the Math I ok?

Math I is rather simple, but if you get one wrong, you are out of the 800. Try the Math II. It is a bit more challenging, but it looks much better. :)

Many engineering programs prefer Math II. Some other schools expressly say it makes no difference whether you take Math I or Math II. Math II is based on more advanced math but has a more generous grading curve, so if you’ve done all the math necessary for Math II it may in fact be the easier test, insofar as you can get a number of answers wrong and still get a top score. Math I is less advanced math but the curve is less forgiving. Except for engineering, most colleges don’t care all that much which SAT IIs you take; they just want to see some high scores. Other parts of your application are probably more important.

If you can do the math 2, you need to do the math 2. For those schools, the most you can do is what you do, always. You’re clearly a math/science person, so if you’re applying in any of those subjects the 2 will look better. Go For It!

I agree that you should take Math II. By the way, have you considered any non-math or science subject tests? If you can score well on those, it will make you look more well-rounded.

Thanks everyone. So I’m definitely doing Math II. Taking something besides these would probably look better on my application but I don’t think I could get a high score on something like Lit. Also, I’m not planning to do something Math or Science related in college, so would it be better to write that I’ll be pursuing one of these subjects but change my major if I get accepted?
