math IC - IIC

My D took the IC last year and got a 630.
She is in honors pre-calc now (junior). Should she take the IIC?

She got a 730 on her SAT I math in January and will be taking the new SAT test in May.

I was wondering the same thing for myself. IIC has a much better curve, and if you study- I don't think the material is all that much more difficult than IC.

You have a couple of things to consider. First and foremost, have your D ask her math teacher if she's ready for the IIc.

It would be nice to get a score on either the Ic or the IIC that tops the 630 she got the first time. On the SAT IIs, a 700 is really the magic number. In very general terms, above a 700 is helpful, below a 700 is not so helpful...(The SAT II scores DON'T correlate to the same SAT I score, partially because a smaller number of students take the IIcs.)

Has your D taken a practice IIc? If so, how did she do? If not, get the Real SAT IIs book, and have her take the one real practice test. If she does fairly well and feels comfortable with the test, then she should probably take that. If not, maybe a retake of the Ic is a better idea.

Lots of people like the IIc better because the scoring curve is more generous. That helps some students, but not all, since the level of math tested is higher. Depending on her precalc class, she should probably have covered most of the material that appears on the IIc, but again, she should check with her math teacher...

I know that's not a concrete answer, but I hope it helps.

thanks....I hadn't even considered that she should retake it or take IIC Until this week when I happend up on CC!

We have been using the KAPLAN SAT II books...are they ok to use?

I find Kaplan books to be fair. They cover most of the material, but not in great depth. They're good review books for students who have covered all of that material, but might not be enough for learning new material. Kaplan practice test aren't overwhelmingly realistic. Lots of people like to use the Barrons book because it covers way more than enough material in depth. Barrons practice tests are considered significantly harder than the real test, though.

Unfortunately, ETS and the College Board don't release lots of sample SAT II tests...they would be the most helpful.
