math IC or IIC?

ok, so i haven't decided for sure if i will take a math SAT II or not. but if i do, i don't know which to take! or if i should take math at all. i'm a junior, taking pre-calc right now. i am horrible at it though, i've been making a C most of the year. so i'm worried that a lot of the IIC test will be pre-calc and i'll be screwed. do colleges look down on the IC test? i think i would be better at it b/c i am much better at geometry, and there's no pre-calc. help please!

It depends on what field of study you plan to enter. Some engineering schools REQUIRE an SAT II Math IIC. I know this is the case for Cornell's engineering college, and i would assume other competitive schools have similar requirements. However, if your going into liberal arts, i don't think you should bother with the IIC if your having trouble with pre-calc.

If you're putting down math, science, or engineering as your major, colleges probably expect to see a Math IIC score.

Well, if you've been averaging a C . . . I'm assuming you probably don't want an Engineering major, since you'll have at least 4 more math classes before you graduate college. However, I have a friend who got into Rice and Baylor (she's going to Rice) and she's majoring in a science field and she only took Math IC, so I don't think it matters too much unless you're planning on majoring in engineering or going to an Ivy League to study science.

My niece took IIC on Saturday. She took calculus at the local college as a soph- i.e. very strong in math. She thought the IIC was VERY hard. I had read on this board that the curve was good and that she should clearly take IIC. Now I'm not so sure. My S took IC on Sat.- he is in pre-calca and has the highest grade in his class, but now I'm not so sure he should take IIC in June.

Well, I could say that I'm in a similar situation as your son . . . I'm in Precalc and have the highest grade out of the 3 periods of Precalc offered at my school. I didn't think SAT II math was too bad though. It's pretty in-line with Precalc stuff. You definitely can't take the class w/o taking a Precalc class, but I wouldn't say it's that difficult (I just took it on Sat.).
