Math/Math Education BA/BSc options for people who already hold a non-related BA

I received a BA in History about a year and a half ago. After much soul-searching, I've decided that I would like to teach high school math. NCLB requires that I hold a BA (or have taken a number of courses) in the subject I would like to teach. Since I only took 2 Math courses in college (both my freshman year), I assume that an MA in Math or Math Education is out of the question. What are some top tier schools that offer second degree options, specifically Math or Math Education, to those who currently hold a non-related BA? Also, what's the likelihood of getting scholarships/grants from these schools? I'd appreciate any kind of advice. Thanks, CC community!

Hi blessedwarrior85, don’t rule out the possibility of a masters in math yet. You could definitely take some courses as a non degree student at your local university. Accumulate some high grades in math class and you might be competitive for a masters program. You will likely find that you are unable to obtain funding for a second bachelors degree.

For education degrees, the first question that you have to answer is “Where do you want to teach?” Licensing requirements vary quite a bit by state and by subject area. You should start by looking up the state licensing requirements in your state of residence. Chances are there is some quickie M.A.T. or M.S.Ed. program out there that you could enroll in. For certification in Math, you may find that you only need to pick up two or three Math courses depending on which ones you took the first time around.

Again, depending on your state, there may be partial funding for a Math Ed. program. You could ask about this at the state department of education, or even at your local school district. Why not pick up the phone and call your favorite HS math teacher and ask for his/her advice? You are almost guaranteed to make that persons day.

Wishing you all the best.
