I’m currently a freshman, and I really love mathematics, but I don’t think I would want to go into pure mathematical research as a career. I’m thinking about pursuing a math major with a computer science minor, then going to graduate school either for computer science or business. Would this be wise or should I just major in computer science?
Your first plan sounds like a good route. Also look into applied math options beyond computer science. I’m not an expert there, but many on this forum are, and I hope they can add more advice there.
You probably don’t need to decide right away because you can complete requirements for both majors in your first year of college. (I say “probably” because math and computer science are in different colleges at some universities, and it might be hard to switch from where you started. It would be easier to switch from computer science to math than vice versa.) Unless you have prior experience with computer science, I’d recommend taking a few classes before you jump into the major.
If you go the route of majoring in math and minoring in computer science, be sure to look up graduate programs and figure out their requirements as you’re deciding what classes to take. You may need to take a few classes beyond what is required for the minor.
