I am currently a junior in high school and am in the IB program. I'm in Math HL (which is equivalent to AP Calc) and Physics SL but I'm thinking about switching to Math SL and Physics HL since I tend to struggle with math, but the problem is, I want to know what is more critical to become a pharmacist? I know both are very but just by curiosity. Math or science?

Please help me! I have to decide to switch out by the latest of monday but i would love to do it by tomorrow! Please please please!!!

No easy way to answer this. My kid had to get through a year of college calculus (no AP credits accepted for prereqs), as well as chem, bio, physics and other science classes like organic chemistry in order to meet pharmacy prereqs. Some of the classes were based on an approach to the subject that was completely different than his high school classes. For example, I learned from him that there are two “kinds” of physics. Don’t ask me what they are, since I don’t have a clue. The physics that was required by his pharmacy school was completely different from the one that he took in high school. He never took ap calculus in high school or even calculus (he took trig), but got high 600s in his math SATs and did very well in college calculus anyway.

I suggest taking whatever program you think will give you the best grades to help with your college admissions, and to make sure that you have an overall basic grounding in math and science for the ACT or SATs. The high school classes may not be as much help with the college classes as you think. If you don’t take calc, make sure you have a strong trig class.

Good luck, and stay calm. You can always pick up a class in Senior year, or even a community college class over the summer to cover extra material.

Yes, I think you are right about picking the higher level class in which I am comfortable with. I would still talk to my sister more about it (she was also in IB) and decide, hopefully by tomorrow and talk to my guidance counselor. Thank you so much for the background information on your son! This really helped!!
