Hi!

So i'm at the point where i'm obligated to take a math placement in order to see which course im placed in college. In addition, my math placement will determine the readiness for the chemistry placement which i will take due to the fact that i will be following the Pre-med track.

The question i ask is on the matter that i must place into Math 160 (Calculus 1), or earn equivalent AP or transfer credit, in order to register for Chemistry 120 in the fall.

Was anyone ever in this situation and has done poorly? How did you recover? How rigorous were your placement exams?

D. math placement was used primarily for her Chemistry palcement. She only took one semester of college Stats, she never took any other college math at all. I believe that you better check the rules at your college. Everybody here would have a different experiences based on ther requirements of their specific program.

@MiamiDAP Was she on the pre-med track as well ?

In 2 weeks, D. is a 4th year Medical student. You can tell that she was on a pre-med track, she did not need to declare it anyhow, except that she was actually in combined bs/md program (but it was only 10 of them)

What math did you have in high school? Some MD schools want some math past Stats and only Harvard’s/MIT HST program wants calc through def eq. Son used his Ap Calc BC score to place vs. taking the placement exam.

Depending on your university some math may be required for Physics as well. Son’s major, econ needed math through def eq. He later majored in biochem and microbio and he needed math through calc 2.

So your math requirement isn’t just for pre-med, for physics, ochem and gen chem but also for your major.

Check the catalog and your advisor.

Kat

D. did not have a choice. In order to register for Gen. Chem. she had to take a placement test (very few minute test, no reason to even think much about it). This test determines the placement into certain Gen. Chem. - D’s UG had very many of the first level of Gen. Chem and pre-meds were advised not to skip it even if they had AP credti for Gen Chem. She also did not have a choice in taking placement test in Foreign language. Basically freshman cannot register for the first semester at D’s UG before they take these 2 (very easy and short) placement tests

I’ve taken AP Calc AB senior year and i won’t find out the scores in the coming July. One of my drawbacks was not taking Stats. I also don’t have a choice in taking my math placement even if i have credit.
More Info: i will also be planning on majoring in Biology/Neuroscience.

Stats are more useful for pre-meds than calc. I do not even understand why it is not required. D. had to work with the statistician on her Research project at med. School. Would se be efficient in communicating with him without having stats? Not sure. And another big thin is it is an easy A.

Calculus is sometimes implicitly required if the undergraduate school lists it as a prerequisite for physics or statistics courses that are acceptable for pre-meds. Of course, some medical schools may explicitly list calculus in their pre-med requirements.

You need to take at least one calc (AP is fine) since Stats are only one semester, unless you are fond of Stats and want to take more, but I do not know if this is OK with Med. Schools. I am saying that one semester of Cacl and one semester of Stats is fine with the most (maybe not all). And those are your easiest As anyway. Then, correct, there are certain requirements for certain majors, I am sure, if one is going to major in mathematics, then they will take much more math than that.
