i've heard loads about the math placement test & how it's very easy & everything--what about the chem placement test...easy? hard? i took ap chem junior year so i'm quite rusty on that subject.

Rusty? All I took was hon chem jun year and i barely got a B lol. I AM RUSTY...and do we have to take it? Cause I know I'll pretty much fail it and go into Chem 130 anyways.

we're advised to take it if there's any chance that we'll be taking chem at mich

i took hon chem junior year and did well, but the placement test? eeeks. it was the kind of test where your mind says "err yes i remember seeing that once upon a time..." oh well. take it for fun!

whose the best professor/gsi for general chem??

LOL....my chem test = bad news bears. I took enriched chemistry freshman year, so all of the stuff looked familier, but still...eek.

I have had chemistry in high school, so I think CHEM 125/126/130 might be review. But at the same time, I do not know if I am completely ready for CHEM 210/211. I know this dilemma is exactly why the Chemistry Placement Test is used, but I still feel unsure. What's everbody else's situation? What minimum score do I need to get on the placement exam to be placed into CHEM210/211? If you are pre-med, isn't it wise to just start with CHEM 125/126/130 because you might have missed concepts not taught (or not as thoroughly taught) in your high school, or because of MCAT testing in the future (regarding basic chem that may not be reviewed in CHEM 210/211)?

stlouis...I am premed and I'm starting at Chem 125/125/130. As for the Chem placement exam, I definitely knew I saw those questions before lol and could have easily answered them...if I was actually studying for the course lol...but it was more of, Oh I remember seeing that!! but forgot how to do it. This one girl I talked to at Orientation got a 77% on her chem exam and placed into Org Chem. If you do really well on the exam, then I think go ahead take Chem 210/211, it only helps you cause you'll get ur chem req out of the way (unless u wanna major in it)...it depends how much you feel you can succeed at Umich. Chem 125/126/130 may indeed be a review..but it could also be an opportunity to get the A and raise your GPA...which is VERY important

Wait, if I want to major in chemistry, I have to take CHEM 125/126/130?

what I meant by that was if you're majoring in Chem and a Premed then it wouldn't really matter about getting Chem req's out of the way cause you're gonna be doing 4 yrs of it anyways. If i was gonna major in Chem and I did well on the chem placement, hell I'd go with Chem 210/211.

Let's say I got a 4 on the AP Chem exam and don't really want to take chem at all in college. (I want to get into Ross, and if I can't, I'll do an econ major at LSA. I don't think chem fits.) Does that mean I'll be wasting time taking the placement test, or should I just go for it since there's no loss anyway?

a 4's all you need to get the 5 gen chem + lab credits, so i guess that being an econ major, you won't need more chem than that. no harm in taking the placement test just to see how you do--scoring in the 70th percentile will qualify you for organic chem.

you're supposed to take the Chem exam anyways regardless of your AP's and if you wanna take a Math Class at UM...Just take it and you can decide later what you wanna do. You're not forced to take Chem if you do the placement exam.

I took AP chem in junior year too and I got a 3. I thought I was a little rusty but the actual test was easy compared to AP material, if you took AP chem in junior year you should be fine.
