I am currently enrolled in MAT 21B. Since I had gotten a 5 on the AP Calc AB exam, I was told that I had fulfilled the requirements for MAT 21A and didn’t need to take the class. So I signed up for MAT 21B. According to the website, all students in MAT 16A, 17A, or 21A need to take the Math Placement Exam. My reasoning was that, since I wasn’t getting automatically enrolled in the exam, and I wasn’t signing up for 21A, but 21B, I didn’t have to take it. However, I got conflicting information from some student advisors, who told me I had to take it, and others, who told me it wasn’t necessary. Does anyone have more information about the subject? Your help would be appreciated!

My son is a 2nd year at UC Davis and it was my understanding that all in-coming Freshman were required to take the Math Placement exam regardless of AP credit. I would bypass the student advisors and go directly to your Major advisor for the most up to date information.

If you skip to the second quarter of calculus (21B, 17B, or 16B), you do not need to take the math placement exam. However, if you’re going to take Chem 2A or 2AH, you must take the math placement exam.
