Math Placement Scores

Does anyone know what scores you need to get to get placed into certain math courses. I didn't do very well on the placement test. I only got a 13 out of 40. Anyone else willing to share their scores?

I didn’t do too well either - a little over 50%. Some of the basic math classes tell you their required scores on SPIRE though.

MATH 101 - P-Cal Alg-Func&Graph - 10 or higher on Part A
MATH 104 - Alg/Analy Geom/Trig - 15 or higher on Part A

Those are the only I could find, but there might be more.

They’ll place you into the proper course at orientation.

what about calc courses? I got a 26/30 on part A and 10/10 on part B. Is there any course that requires a perfect score?

I got 29/30 on the first test,
And a 5/10 on the second test…

I got a 27/30 on part A
10/10 part b

Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using CC

I got a 30/30 on Part A
9/10 for Part B

So close to a perfect score. (Most of them just require you to put stuff into your calculator, and you’re done.)

I got 30/30 on Part I and 10/10 on Part II. What exactly does this mean though? Do I get placed in a different class or do I get exempt from a basic math class?

29/30 on part A and 10/10 on part B

I’ll be taking the placement test within a few days. Can anybody tell me what the test is like. What type of questions are on the test? Is it easy or hard? Are there any samples available?

Hi geek97!
Have you taken the placement test yet? I am also going to UMASS Amherst. I don’t think anyone in my school is going there so I’m looking for some friends. If you want to make friend, just contact me. Maybe we can go to the orientation together

I am a rising sophomore and I did well on the placement test (like 29/30 and 10/10 i think) which placed me into the highest class they offer through the placement test, calculus 1. however, i took ap calc ab so i just took calc 2. likewise, if you took calc 2, they would probably recommend calc 3. at the time i went to orientation, i was in the college of humanities and fine arts, so they didn’t really know how to place me into higher math (as in they only knew up to calc 1, and i was technically “off the charts” by already taking that… most humanities people do not like math), but if you are in the college of natural sciences for example, they should very well know how to place you. these people know what they are doing, so i wouldnt stress too much.

Based on however many questions you get right, that is what you are placed into. Like nineum said, 10+ could be math 101, but if you get 15+ they would recommend you take math 104, etc as you go up, all the way up to calc 1.

For those asking what is on the test, the first part I believe was algebra and the second part was trigonometry.

You may not even have to take a math class. There are two math general education requirements to fulfill, R1 and R2. R1 is basic algebra (the first part of the placement test). You can take an R1 exemption test (basically the placement test) once school starts and if you get like 12/20 or something, you pass and don’t have to take an “R1” class. R2 is about critical thinking or something, so I know some people who fulfill it with a linguistics class so that they don’t have to take math. But there are also majors that require you take calculus, like some science majors

let me know if you have any other questions

@paws27 I wanna major in History and minor in Education at UMass to get a teachers license, so would I just need to fill those Gen Ed. credits? or do I need to have a Calc.course?

@Darksand99 you would just need to fulfill gen ed credits, no calc course necessary (unless you wanted).

it’s a coincidence because i originally planned on majoring in history and minoring in education and getting a teaching license, but i have since realized that history is not my calling lol

@paws27 haha wow, what are the odds. I hope I find out if it’s my calling since History’s the only subject I’ve ever really had an interest in. Thanks for the help!

was precalc on the test?

@paws27 Took the placement test right now. I got a 29/30 on the first one and a 9/10 on the second one which is a good score right? Also, does that mean I can take the course of my choice?

Yes @Clovery I have taken the Math Placement Test. I haven’t taken the Writing test yet. Sure, I would be pleased to be friends. How about meeting up on facebook once?

@geek97 How was the math placement test? Was it all at a basic level or did it include intense math as well? Also,do you recommend any topics to study? Thanks for your help!!

As an International Student,I need help more than anyone else. Here are a few queries:

  1. What Are the topics tested on test?
  2. Which books should I refer to for studying for the test?
  3. What’s the difficulty level?
  4. Is the Test Similar to SAT 1 Math?
  5. Will the study materials for SAT 1 Math suffice for this test?
    PLEASE HELP
