what is the math placement test like. how many questions? what topics covered?

i have yet to take it within the next few hours, but since I have taken a gap year and forgotten most of my math, i just want to know what i am up for very soon.

I have not seen the test but I will repeat what little I heard. D was finally taking the test last night. She was also wondering before the test and I asked her what was she hearing on Facebook. She went to the Harvard 13 group and read some posts. She then took the test without talking to me. What I hear afterwards it that there are three sections @ 30 minutes each. The first section is the only required section and it was straightforward math. Sections 2 and 3 are not required but suggested for those who took Calculus. She did take the other sections and I got no feedback on them but she did state that “no one was taking anything beyond section 1 because they were not looking to test out”. That last comment I believe was based on what she read on facebook.

I am sure that actual class of 13 students will give better info.

Math placement is split in to 3 levels L1 (mostly precalc), L2 (Calc AB and a bit higher),
L3 (Calc BC, MV Calculus and Linear Algebra). Each level is typically out of 30 points.

Most Math< Science students I know score above 25 in L1, ~15-20 in L2 and
either bomb out on L3 (< 15) or do very well (> 25).

Take the exams without prep since it will give you a better idea of where you stand.

The math placement tests are not going to allow you to test out of anything, they just provide
guidelines. It is your score on the AP CalC BC which does not let you take credit for 1A, 1B and
hence you will have to take 19/21/… etc.
