Lois divides her birthday candy into t equal piles. If she gives 3 piles to her friend mark, in terms of t, which of the following represents the percent of her candy that she has left.

A.(t-3)100/t
B.(t-3)/100t
C.(t-3)/t
D.(100t)/(t-3)
E.(t-3)/100

You may want to try making up a number for t…I’d go with something that makes the problem easy but not obvious…like t=10. Work out your answer and then plug t=10 into each choice…

Lois gives 3 piles to Mark, so she has t-3 piles left over. There are t piles total, so the fraction of the amount of candy she has is (t-3)/t. To convert to a percent, multiply by 100, so the answer is (100(t-3))/t, answer choice A.

Each pile will be 100/t percent of the total.
Let e, denoting each, be e = 100/t;

The total amount she has left will be 100 - 3e;
Now plug the e back in and name it A, a variable denoting the answer;
A = 100 - 300/t;
At = 100t - 300;
At = 100(t-3)
A = 100(t-3)/t

Coincidentally the A happens to be answer choice A.
