Math requirements in high school for Wharton/CAS

Hi I was just wondering what the UPENN math requirements are at PENN for admission. I know it depends on what type of high school I go to but are there really any prerequisites? I don't want to know what my chances are but just want to know any facts.

If I plan on going to Wharton what would I have needed to take in Highschool? What about as an econ major at CAS? I went to a wharton info session and the kid running the session said as a freshman they took Calc AB first semester and Calc BC second semester. He also said calculus in high school was required but didn't elaborate much on this and only mentioned it for five seconds. My School offers up to Calculus BC but I won't be taking calculus a senior. I did pre-calc as a junior and finished with a B- so was forced to take Statistics instead of Calculus. Is this a killer for Wharton/CAS?
thanks,

For Wharton/econ, Penn would expect that you take the highest calculus course offered by your high school. It will not look good to take stat instead, because they know it’s the easier option. The B- in precalc doesn’t look great either. If you are have very strong grades in all of your other courses, and the rest of your application is solid, then you still have a shot, I’d say.

For CAS, you don’t need to have taken calculus. There are plenty of humanities majors here who are either not that great at, or not interested in math. To fulfill the formal reasoning requirement, they often take Math 170, which is not a real math class and below the level of calculus from what I hear. However, you are required to have taken Calculus in high school for Wharton. This doesn’t need you need to have an incredible gift for math. I notice on these boards that there is a tendency to exaggerate the ability in math one must have to get into Wharton. As someone who has taken and will take a lot of math/math related classes at Penn, I will tell you that I have met plenty of Wharton kids who have no interest in math as well as several who will admit themselves that they are not that great at it. Of course you need to be competent in it to complete your coursework, but it doesn’t require anything math above 114, 114 only being necessary to explain partial derivatives. When I was talking to a Wharton student about Bpub, she actually referred to it as “economics with watered down math”.

I was also wondering about this. Do you think I would be fine if I took AP stat/ honors trigonometry junior year then moved onto AP BC calc senior year in terms of meeting any requirements for Wharton?

Yes that would definitely work. Many Wharton kids never took BC, only AB.

Ok great so Calculus is a pre-requisite. Is regular a pre-requisite, or is AB a prerequisite? Because wharton starts with math 104 which expects students to be comfotable with calc AB. When I went to the wharton info session, they said calc ab was take the first semester of freshman year and calc bc was taken the second semester of freshman year.
